Her2/neu was thought to be a proto-oncogene with sequence homology to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Its overexpression was seen in many cancers and referred to regimens of anticancer therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the abnormal expression existed in oral carcinogenesis. ⋯ These findings suggested a dynamic change in Her2/neu expression during the development of OSCC. The overexpression of Her2/neu can be used as a marker in distinguishing NOM/ED from OSCC.

Flexible endoscopy (FE) for the pediatric aerodigestive tract is an invasive and complicated procedure; therefore, it is usually performed under an inpatient setting. We investigated whether FE could be a safe procedure for outpatient young children (< 5 years old) and analyzed the findings. ⋯ From this study, we conclude that FE is a safe, effective and tolerable outpatient procedure in the majority of young children, and serious complications were uncommon.

Percutaneous drainage of large subcapsular hematoma of the spleen complicating acute pancreatitis.
The splenic complications associated with acute or chronic pancreatitis are rare, including splenic vein thrombosis, arterial pseudoaneurysm, subcapsular splenic hematoma, and splenic rupture. The management for subcapsular splenic hematoma in pancreatitis remains controversial. We herein report a rare case of large subcapsular splenic hematoma complicating acute pancreatitis, which was successfully treated by ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage. ⋯ After 4-week drainage of the hematoma, the abdominal pain improved and the patient was discharged. Follow-up abdominal CT 6 months later showed that the subcapsular splenic hematoma had almost completely resolved. The post-drainage course was smooth, and the patient had no abdominal symptoms at the 1-year follow-up.

Centella asiatica (CeA) is a creeper, growing in moist places in India and other Asian countries. Leaves of CeA are used for memory enhancement in the Ayurvedic system of medicine, an alternate system of medicine in India. In the present study, we investigated the role of CeA fresh leaf extract treatment on the dendritic morphology of hippocampal CA3 neurons, one of the regions concerned with learning and memory, in adult rats. ⋯ We conclude that constituents present in Centella asiatica fresh leaf extract has neuronal dendritic growth-stimulating properties.

Malignant hyperthermia is a rare anesthetic-related disorder. We present a case with unusual presentation. A boy aged 3 years and 9 months who was scheduled for Hotz's operation presented normally before the operation. ⋯ The following tachycardia, hypercapnia and hyperthermia led to the diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia. Symptoms were relieved dramatically after the discontinuation of sevoflurane. Molecular genetic testing identified a novel ryanodine receptor (RYR1) mutation in exon 39, which confirmed malignant hyperthermia susceptibility in this patient.
