Cigarette smoking, opioid consumption, and pain intensity after major surgery: An observational study.
Chronic exposure to nicotine may change pain perception and promote opioid intake. This study aimed to evaluate the putative effect of cigarette smoking on opioid requirements and pain intensity after surgery. ⋯ Current cigarette smokers experienced higher acute pain, had more IV-PCA infusion requests, and consumed more opioids after surgery. Multimodal analgesia with nonopioid analgesics and opioid-sparing techniques, along with smoking cessation should be considered for this population.

To evaluate the clinical feasibility of interstitial brachytherapy by intraoperative free-hand catheter implantation in the treatment of early breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery (BCS). ⋯ Accelerated partial breast irradiation using interstitial brachytherapy with the intraoperative free-hand catheter implantation technique provides an alternative method of postoperative radiotherapy for selected patients with early breast cancer after BCS with acceptable toxicities.

Health-related quality of life improvement by adalimumab therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in Taiwan: A nationwide prospective study.
To determine the effects of adalimumab on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Taiwanese patients with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (NCT02616380). ⋯ HRQoL improved after initiation of adalimumab therapy in Taiwanese patients with moderate-to-severe RA.

Neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) is conducted in increased number of patients with breast cancer overexpressing human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Whether the intensity of HER2 protein expression determines response to treatment is challenged. This study aims to analyze the impact of HER2 immunohistochemical (IHC) scores on NST response and survival outcome. ⋯ HER2 IHC score is an independent predictor for outcome. IHC 3+ tumors presented a trend of higher pCR rate and better outcome in HER2-positive breast cancer patients who receive NST.

The standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by surgical excision. Current evidence suggests a favorable prognosis for those with pathological complete response (pCR), and surgery may be spared for them. We trained and validated regression models for CRT response prediction with selected radiomic features extracted from pretreatment magnetic resonance (MR) images to recruit potential candidates for this watch-and-wait strategy. ⋯ Radiomic features derived from pretreatment MR images demonstrated promising efficacy in predicting pCR after CRT. However, radiomic features combined with clinical features did not result in remarkable improvement in model performance.
