SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: systemic review and meta-analysis.
In the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination has been effective in preventing COVID-19 infections and related mortality. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was also recommended by the international society for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, IBD patients were not recruited in prospective randomized clinical vaccine studies. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in IBD patients, we conducted this systemic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is effective and tolerated in preventing COVID-19 infections in IBD patients. Over 98% of patients had seroconversion after receiving all doses of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and the influence of biologics on vaccination was limited. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is recommended for IBD patients.

Association of thyroid hormones and TSH with mortality in adults admitted to the ICU: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Thyroid hormones (THs) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) seem to show high potential in predicting the clinical death outcome of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). However, diverse studies on this topic are conflicting. ⋯ Nonsurvivors were associated with lower levels of THs (T3, T4, fT3, and fT4) than survivors. THs show great application potential in predicting ICU patients' death outcomes and improving already widely used prognostic scores in the ICU (ie, Acute Physiological and Chronic Health Evaluation [APACHE] II and Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System).

Lung carcinoma (LC) is the third most common cancer diagnosis and accounted for the most cancer-related mortality worldwide in 2018. Based on the type of cells from which it originates, LC is commonly classified into non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancers (SCLC). NSCLC account for the majority of LC and can be further categories into adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. ⋯ Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt is another signal pathway that regulates cell cycle and has been linked to NSCLC progression. Currently, three generations of EGFR TKIs have been developed as a first-line treatment of NSCLC patients with EGFR activation and mutation in which these treatment options will be further discussed in this review. Microsporidial stromal keratitis is an increasingly well-known vision-threatening disease. A large proportion of cases are initially misdiagnosed as herpes simplex keratitis and treated with topical steroids. In most of such cases, medical treatment failed, and corneal transplantation was required. ⋯ Histopathological examination revealed numerous microsporidial spores that had colonized in the mid and deep stroma, where few inflammatory cells were observed. These findings explain the variable microsporidial susceptibility to chlorhexidine, suggesting the crucial role of host immunity. In cases of host immunity, topical chlorhexidine may represent a promising option for the treatment of microsporidial stromal keratitis.

To compare the efficacy and safety of combination therapy with sorafenib and drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with or without hepatic arteriovenous shunt (HAVS). ⋯ For advanced HCC, combination therapy had equal efficacy and safety in patients with HAVS compared to those without HAVS, indicating that DEB-TACE is an optional and effective treatment in these patients.
