The early detection and prediction of bacteremic sepsis in preterm and term neonates remains a challenging task because of their nonspecific clinical presentations. We aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with bacteremia and find the cutoff values of predictive markers to achieve accurate diagnosis of neonatal bacteremic sepsis. ⋯ Early- and late-onset neonatal sepsis had different risk factors and predictive markers of bacteremia. PCT and PLT count in the early-onset group and WBC count in the late-onset group were accurate diagnostic serum markers for neonatal bacteremic sepsis.

Identifying the risk factors for complications may alert the physicians and help them adjust their plans before performing computed tomography-guided lung biopsies. Reportedly, a pleura-nodule distance longer than 2.0 cm is a strong predictor for pneumothorax and pulmonary hemorrhage. However, the rate and risk factors of biopsy-associated complications in subpleural lesions have not been assessed. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for pneumothorax and pulmonary hemorrhage in subpleural lesions ≤2.0 cm in depth. ⋯ For subpleural lesions ≤2.0 cm in depth, a puncture route having a shorter needle path and passing through the lung parenchyma with higher attenuation may reduce the risk of biopsy-associated pneumothorax ≥1 cm. A higher needle-pleura angle may reduce the risk of pulmonary hemorrhage ≥2 cm in the short axis.

It is unclear whether neural response telemetric (NRT) thresholds are related to lexical tonal language performance after cochlear implants (CIs). We explored the factors associated with changes in NRT thresholds and postoperative performance of CI patients. ⋯ Curved electrode arrays were associated with lower postoperative NRT thresholds. A lower postoperative NRT threshold might predict better performance of Mandarin-speaking CI patients. Future studies should evaluate factors that affect both postoperative NRT thresholds and lexical tonal language performance.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis, and hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy has long been used clinically to treat knee OA. The aim of this study was to investigate the inflammation-related protein-expression profile characterizing the efficacy of the hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy in knee OA as prognostic markers. ⋯ The findings provide knee OA patients receiving hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy, which is accompained by the improvemeny of knee symptoms and associated tendency of upregulation of MMP2, EGF, CXCL 9 and IL-22.

There is a dearth of information on male dementia caregivers in Asia and, in particular, on the factors relating to caregiver burden. We aimed to identify factors that may be associated with burden among male caregivers of people with dementia (PWD). ⋯ Poor ADL and apathy in PWD and being a patient's son were associated with higher levels of burden among male dementia caregivers. Effective interventions are needed to assist male caregivers in accomplishing their caregiving role and at the same time to alleviate their caregiver burden.
