Genetic polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in Chinese patients with end-stage renal disease secondary to IgA nephropathy.
Genetic variability in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system may modify renal responses to injury and disease progression. The angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion/deletion (I/D), the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene, M235T, the aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) gene, C-344T, and the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) gene, A1166C, have been shown to be associated with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and its progression. We determined the presence of these polymorphisms in 130 Chinese patients with IgAN, including 47 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and 120 healthy Chinese subjects, to assess their impact on the susceptibility to disease and the liability of progression to ESRD. ⋯ Among the ACE, AGT, AT1R and CYP gene polymorphisms, only the DD genotype may predispose the individual to increased risk of progression to ESRD in the Chinese population.

ReviewSelection of allografts for impaction bone grafting for bone defect reconstruction on the acetabular side.
To review the choices of allografts for bone defect reconstruction in acetabular revision surgery using the technique of impaction bone grafting. ⋯ Fresh frozen cancellous allografts with particle sizes ranging from 7 to 10 mm are a favorable choice for reconstruction of bone defects of American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) types II (cavitary defect) and III (combined cavitary and segmental defect) on the acetabular side. A fat-reducing procedure with saline or solvent/detergent is controversial. Adding autologous marrow into irradiated allografts, which provides reliable mechanical stability and biological safety, may be a substitute for fresh frozen allografts. Cortical bone can be a supplementary material in cases of insufficiency of cancellous allografts. Cartilage should be excluded from the graft material. Further research is required to demonstrate the best particle grade, and randomized controlled trials in clinical practice are required to obtain more information about the selection of allografts.

Clinical and prognostic characteristics of 573 cases of primary Sjögren's syndrome.
Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is one of the autoimmune diseases with high incidence. There were several clinical investigations in Caucasian but seldom in Chinese. The aim of this study was to compare the difference of clinical manifestations, immunological features and prognosis of pSS between Caucasian and Chinese pSS patients. ⋯ Chinese pSS differs significantly from the non-Chinese cases in terms of the age of onset, systemic involvement, autoantibodies and proportional mortality rate. Lung and liver damage were found to be the highest risk factors of the disease prognosis.

Comparison of the quantities and subset distributions of natural killer cells among different races.
Natural killer (NK) cells play critical roles in host immune defense, while the quantities and subset distributions may vary among different races. To address the difference, we compared these variables among Chinese Han, the Caucasians and the Blacks. The study may provide critical background information for both basic research and clinical investigation. ⋯ Our data indicated that NK cell count and the distribution of different subsets varied among different races, which should be taken into consideration in related investigations.

Efficacy and clinical/molecular predictors of erlotinib monotherapy for Chinese advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
A retrospective analysis of clinical data were conducted reviewing patients who were given erlotinib at Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) Hospital from May 2005 to December 2009. Relationships between clinical factors, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mRNA expression, EGFR gene mutations, KRAS gene mutations and clinical outcomes were investigated in Chinese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ Erlotinib was safe and effective in treating Chinese patients with advanced NSCLC. The PFS of patients who had a skin rash, highly differentiated tumors, or EGFR exon 19/21 mutations was significantly longer.
