Percutaneous balloon angioplasty for severe native aortic coarctation in young infants less than 6 months: medium- to long-term follow-up.
Although balloon angioplasty (BA) has been performed for more than 20 years, its use as a treatment for native coarctation of the aorta (CoA) during childhood, especially in young infants, remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the effects and potential role of percutaneous transcatheter BA for native CoA as an alternative therapy to surgical repair in young infants. ⋯ Percutaneous BA is a relatively safe and effective treatment for severe native CoA in young infants, and should be considered a valid alternative to surgery because of its good outcome and less trauma and fewer complications than surgery.

Incidence of pleural effusion in patients with pulmonary embolism.
No data on the incidence of pleural effusion (PE) in Chinese patients with pulmonary embolism are available to date. The aim of the current study was to investigate the frequency of PE in a Chinese population of patients with pulmonary embolism. ⋯ PEs are present in about one fifth of a Chinese population of patients with pulmonary embolism, which are usually small, unilateral, and unsuitable for diagnostic thoracentesis.

Proteomic analysis for finding serum pathogenic factors and potential biomarkers in multiple myeloma.
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant tumor, which takes the second place in malignant blood disease. The clinical symptoms are complicated that make more difficult to diagnose and therapy. Lots of researches focus on the proteins about MM in order to solve those problems. We used proteomic methods to find potential biomarkers in MM patients. ⋯ PLLB combined with 1D-gel-LC-MS/MS analysis is an efficient method to identify differentially expressed proteins in serum from patients with MM.

Tongxinluo inhibits cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, hypoxia-inducible factor-2α/vascular endothelial growth factor to antagonize injury in hypoxia-stimulated cardiac microvascular endothelial cells.
Endothelial dysfunction is considered as the initiating process and pathological basis of cardiovascular disease. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostacyclin synthase (PGIS), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial NOS (eNOS) are key enzymes with opposing actions in inflammation and oxidative stress, which are believed to be the major driver of endothelial dysfunction. And in hypoxia (Hx), Hx-inducible factor (HIF)-1α and HIF-2α are predominantly induced to activate vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), resulting in abnormal proliferation. Whether and how Tongxinluo (TXL) modulates COX-2, PGIS, iNOS, eNOS, HIF-1α, HIF-2α, and VEGF in Hx-stimulated human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (HCMECs) have not been clarified. ⋯ TXL could inhibit inflammation-related COX-2, oxidative stress-related iNOS, and HIF-2α/VEGF to antagonize Hx-induced HCMEC injury.

Calpain inhibitor reduces cancer-induced bone pain possibly through inhibition of osteoclastogenesis in rat cancer-induced bone pain model.
Calpain, a calcium-dependent cysteine protease, has been demonstrated to regulate osteoclastogenesis, which is considered one of the major reasons for cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP). In the present study, calpain inhibitor was applied in a rat CIBP model to determine whether it could reduce CIBP through regulation of osteoclastogenesis activity. ⋯ Calpain inhibitor can effectively reduce CIBP of both the surgical side and nonsurgical side after tumor injection in a rat CIBP model. It may be due to the inhibition of receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand-induced osteoclastogenesis. Whether a calpain inhibitor could be a novel therapeutic target to treat CIBP needs further investigation.
