Vimentin modulates apoptosis and inflammatory cytokine release by a human monocytic cell line (THP-1) in response to lipopolysaccharides in vitro.
It has recently been recognized that serum vimentin is elevated in infectious diseases, and that vimentin plays a role in regulating neutrophils and macrophages associated inflammation. However, the mechanisms are unclear. This study was designed to explore the role of vimentin in regulating monocyte survival or apoptosis as well as inflammatory cytokine secretion in response to lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). ⋯ In summary, the vimentin may regulate innate immunity through modulating monocytes viability as well as inflammatory response in sepsis through shifting the balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of hypersensitivity pneumonitis: a population-based study in China.
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune-mediated interstitial lung disease (ILD) that develops in response to the inhalation of various antigens. The clinical pathologies are very complex and undetermined. The clinical features and outcomes of HP have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence, clinical features, and outcomes of HP patients and construct a simple clinical model for diagnosing chronic HP (CHP). ⋯ The clinical features and outcomes of the CHP patients differ from those of the AHP patients. ADSUC is a simple and feasible clinical model for CHP. Unidentified exposure is an independent risk factor for the progression of AHP to CHP. Unidentified exposure and a low baseline TLC pred% are independent predictors for survival in HP patients.

DL-3-n-butylphthalide protects the blood-brain barrier against ischemia/hypoxia injury via upregulation of tight junction proteins.
The increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) induced by ischemia/hypoxia is generally correlated with alteration of tight junctions (TJs). DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects after ischemic injury. However, few studies have assessed the correlation between NBP and TJs. This study aimed to investigate the potential effect of NBP on the TJ proteins claudin-5, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), and occludin during brain ischemia. ⋯ NBP improves the barrier function of BBB against ischemic injury by upregulating the expression of TJ proteins, possibly by reducing oxidative stress and activating the Akt/GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on pulmonary hypertension in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome are highly prevalent respiratory conditions. Their coexistence is referred to as the overlap syndrome. They are both related to pulmonary hypertension (PH) development. This study investigated the effects of OSA on PH in patients with COPD and the associated factors. ⋯ Patients with COPD with OSA are more susceptible to PH, which is associated with declining lung function and increased severity of OSA. Thus, nocturnal hypoxemia and OSA in elderly patients with COPD should be identified and treated.
