Differentiation of white and red thrombus with magnetic resonance imaging: a phantom study.
An early identification of the composition of arterial thrombus may have diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic implications. The variation of magnetic resonance (MR) signal intensity between white and red thrombi, especially in the susceptibility sensitive MR sequence, remains unknown. Our research was to evaluate the feasibility of MRI in differentiating of white and red thrombi with a phantom study. ⋯ Differentiation of white and red thrombi with conventional MR sequence is unreliable, because both kinds of thrombi do not possess unique signal intensity features in these sequences. Red thrombus may or may not show hypointensity in the susceptibility sensitive MR sequences, depending on its size and time course.

Clinical TrialSteady-state pharmacokinetics of zidovudine in Chinese HIV-infected patients.
The pharmacokinetics of zidovudine (AZT) are possibly influenced by weight, age, sex, liver and renal functions, severity of disease, and ethnicity. Currently, little information is available on the steady-state pharmacokinetics of AZT in Chinese HIV-infected patients. The current study aimed to characterize the steady-state pharmacokinetics of AZT in a Chinese set-up. ⋯ The present study provides valuable information for the clinical practice of AZT-based highly active antiretroviral therapy in a Chinese set-up.

Case ReportsTwo cases of acute aortic dissection following preeclampsia in non-Marfan patients.
Aortic dissection accompanying with preeclampsia during pregnancy can be lethal to both the mother and the fetus and carries a high mortality. Of the 2 preeclampsia patients with aortic dissection, one was Type B aortic dissection, occurring in postpartum period. ⋯ This patient was undiagnosed and both died. Although extremely rare, aortic dissection might be a possibility in preeclampsia pregnant women, the differential diagnosis of chest and/or epigastric pain in preeclampia patient should be thoroughly investigated and treated.

Genetic characterization of a Chinese family with familial idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic inflammatory interstitial lung disease with an unknown cause. Recent studies have shown that genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of IPF. ⋯ Although the functions of the mutant candidate genes vary, these genes may ultimately result in damage to alveolar epithelial cells, initiating the progress of pulmonary fibrosis. In particular, while pathophysiological mechanisms need to be illustrated, the Gln238Lys missense variant of exon 6 in the SFTPA1 may have potential susceptibility in the development of IPF, which was shown in patients with sporadic IPF with a statistically higher frequency.

Culture supernatants of breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 treated with parthenolide inhibit the proliferation, migration, and lumen formation capacity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
Parthenolide has been tested for anti-tumor activities, such as anti-proliferation and pro-apoptosis in recent studies. However, little is known about its role in the process of tumor angiogenesis. This study aims to investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of parthenolide on the proliferation, migration and lumen formation capacity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. ⋯ Parthenolide may suppress angiogenesis through decreasing angiogenic factors secreted by breast cancer cells to interfere with the proliferation, migration and lumen-like structure formation of endothelial cells, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. It is a promising potential anti-angiogenic drug.
