Feasibility and acute toxicity of 3-dimensional conformal external-beam accelerated partial-breast irradiation for early-stage breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery in Chinese female patients.
A growing number of studies worldwide have advocated the replacement of whole-breast irradiation with accelerated partial breast irradiation using three-dimensional conformal external-beam radiation (APBI-3DCRT) for early-stage breast cancer. But APBI can be only used in selected population of patients with early-staged breast cancer. It is not replacing the whole breast radiotherapy. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and acute normal tissue toxicity of the APBI-3DCRT technique in Chinese female patients who generally have smaller breasts compared to their Western counterparts. ⋯ The results of our short-term follow-up showed that it is feasible to perform APBI-3DCRT for early-stage breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery in Chinese female patients with smaller breasts. However, further studies are required to elucidate its efficacy and long-term side effects.

Risk factors for postoperative seromas in Chinese breast cancer patients.
Seroma formation is one of the most common complications after breast cancer surgery. Various risk factors have been evaluated for their associations with the development of seromas in Western populations. However, similar data are not available in Chinese series. Therefore, we sought to investigate the potential risk factors for Chinese breast cancer patients. ⋯ Although the pathogenesis of seroma remains controversial, such risk factors as age, nutritional status, drainage volume on POD3 and TTV30 should be considered for prediction and prevention of seroma formation in Chinese breast cancer patients.

Effect of low-energy shock waves in microfracture holes in the repair of articular cartilage defects in a rabbit model.
Microfracture is a type of bone marrow stimulation in arthroscopic cartilage repair. However, the overall concentration of the mesenchymal stem cells is quite low and declines with age, and in the end the lesion is filled by fibrocartilage. The aim of this research was to investigate a novel method of enhancing microfracture by determining whether low-energy shock waves in microfracture holes would facilitate cartilage repair in a rabbit model. ⋯ In the repair of full-thickness articular cartilage defects in rabbits, low-energy shock waves in microfracture holes facilitated the production of hyaline-like cartilage repair tissues more than microfracture alone. This model demonstrates a new method of improving microfracture and applying shock waves in vivo. However, longer-term outcomes require further study.

E1A, E1B double-restricted adenovirus enhances the cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of gemcitabine to renal cell carcinoma.
Our previous studies have demonstrated potent oncolysis efficacy of the E1A, E1B double-restricted replication-competent oncolytic adenovirus AxdAdB-3 for treatment of bladder cancer. Here, we reported the feasibility and efficacy of AxdAdB-3 alone, or in combination with gemcitabine for treating renal cell carcinoma. ⋯ AxdAdB-3 alone, or in combination with gemcitabine may be a promising strategy against renal cell carcinoma.

Predictors of postoperative myasthenic crisis in patients with myasthenia gravis after thymectomy.
Thymectomy is considered the most effective treatment in patients with myasthenia gravis. This study aimed to explore the predictors of postoperative myasthenic crisis in patients with myasthenia gravis after thymectomy. ⋯ Osserman stage (IIb + IIIb + IV), thymoma and major postoperative complications are independent predictors of postoperative myasthenic crisis in patients with myasthenia gravis who underwent thymectomy.
