Contribution of the Akt2 gene to type 2 diabetes in the Chinese Han population.
The Akt2 protein kinase is thought to be a key mediator of the insulin signal transduction process. Akt2 is suggested to play a role in glucose metabolism and the development or maintenance of proper adipose tissue and islet mass. In order to determine whether the Akt2 gene plays a role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes characterized by insulin resistance, and to further identify if variations in this gene have a relationship with type 2 diabetes, we sequenced the entire coding region and splice junctions of Akt2 and made a further case-control study to explore the association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this gene and type 2 diabetes in the Chinese Han population. ⋯ The Akt2 gene is not a major cause of diabetes in a non-obese Chinese Han population characterized by insulin resistance. There is no significant relationship between rs2304186 and type 2 diabetes in the Chinese Han population.

Comparison of three methods for detecting epidermal growth factor receptor mutations in plasma DNA samples of Chinese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations can predict tumor response to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Detecting EGFR mutations in plasma DNA samples in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer is challenging and promising. We compared three methods for detecting plasma EGFR mutations, including direct DNA sequencing, denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) and Scorpions Amplification Refractory Mutation System (Scorpions ARMS). ⋯ Among the three methods for detecting EGFR mutations in plasma DNA samples of patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma, direct gene sequencing had the lowest sensitivity, while Scorpion ARMS showed the highest mutation detecting capability. DHPLC is slightly less sensitive than Scorpion ARMS. EGFR mutations in exons 19 (deletion mutation) and 21 (L858R mutation) predict a longer PFS.

Multicenter StudyEfficacy and safety of Firebird sirolimus-eluting stent in treatment of complex coronary lesions in Chinese patients: one-year clinical and eight-month angiographic outcomes from the FIREMAN registry.
Off-label application of drug-eluting stents (DES) during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was not uncommon in daily practice, however DES in treating Chinese patients with complex lesion subset was under-investigated. The primary objective of the FIREMAN registry was to evaluate the long term efficacy and safety of the Firebird sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) in treating patients with complex coronary lesions. Here we report the mid-term of one-year clinical outcomes and eight-month angiographic follow-up results of FIREMAN registry. ⋯ The results showed that the Firebird SES was effective and safe in treating Chinese patients with complex coronary lesions and occurrence of ST rate at one-year clinical follow-up was acceptable, however further long-term follow-up was still necessary. Single dose of ibutilide for conversion of persistent atrial fibrillation after radiofrequency ablation.
Patients with persistent or permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) often need direct current cardioversion after radiofrequency ablation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of ibutilide for cardioversion of persistent or permanent atrial fibrillation after radiofrequency ablation and the factors related to conversion. ⋯ A single dose of ibutilide for conversion of persistent or permanent AF after radiofrequency ablation is safe and effective.

Current trend of induction and maintenance treatment in positive panel-reactive antibody patients: a report on OPTN/UNOS kidney transplant registry data.
The status of sensitization in kidney transplant recipients in the last 10 years and the trend of induction and maintenance therapy in patients of different panel-reactive antibody (PRA) levels have not been analyzed. The aim of this study was to investigate the current status of pre-transplant sensitization and its association with graft outcome. ⋯ Application of sensitive antibody testing techniques increased the mean PRA levels of transplant recipients in spite of a decreased percentage of sensitized recipients. Induction and maintenance therapy differed in patients at different PRA levels.
