Scurvy is well known since ancient times, but it is rarely seen in the developed world today owing to the discovery of its link to the dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid. It is very uncommon in the pediatric population, and is usually seen in children with severely restricted diet attributable to psychiatric or developmental disturbances. The condition presents itself by the formation of perifollicular petechiae and bruising, gingival inflammation and bleeding, and, in children, bone disease. ⋯ The diagnosis was made based on clinical and radiographic findings. The importance of diet history is emphasized. We present this case with the aim to help the clinician identify scurvy and implement treatment for a potentially fatal but easily curable disease.

ReviewCurrent status of nitrous oxide as a behavior management practice routine in pediatric dentistry.
Nitrous oxide (N(2)O) as a behavioral management intervention in children has attained an excellent safety record and is, therefore, used widely. As is true of any diagnostic or therapeutic dental intervention, however, its usage merits periodic review, even if-or particularly when-it is routinely applied. ⋯ Using historical publications, current empirical articles, professional usage policies, and educational textbooks, the purpose of this article was to review indications and contraindications of N(2)O and discuss various factors that should or should not be considered about its use in the United States. Even though today's parents may be more accepting of pharmacologic approaches such as N(2)O, the choice to use it should always be made with the child's best interest in mind.

Case ReportsCongenital insensitivity to pain (hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type V): a rare case report.
Congenital insensitivity (HSAN) to pain is a rare disorder, which affects the body's painprotective mechanism and predisposes the patient to increased risk and incidence of traumatic injuries. Currently, 5 types of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies have been identified, depending upon different patterns of sensory and autonomic dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, clinical features, and genetic abnormalities. ⋯ History, clinical features, nerve conduction studies, and electron microscopy revealed no reaction to painful stimuli, a self-mutilating habit, multiple missing teeth, and an absence of small, unmyelinated fibers, thus indicating HSAN type V. Management included patient counseling and use of a mouthguard to prevent further damage and restore function.

The efficacy of chlorhexidine spray vs mouthwash in the microbial contamination of child toothbrushes.
The purposes of this study were to, determine the level of contamination by mutans streptococci on the toothbrushes of children using microbial identification and evaluate the efficacy of 0.12% chlorhexidine spray vs chlorhexidine mouthwash as toothbrush disinfectants. ⋯ All toothbrushes immersed in sterile saline showed high mutans streptococci counts and biofilm formation. There was no statistically significant difference between the chlorhexidine mouthwash and spray groups, and both approaches had the ability to disinfect the toothbrushes if maintained for 2 hours.

Dental students attitudes regarding online education in pediatric dentistry.
The Atlas of Pediatric Dentistry is a Web-based (Atlas of Pediatric Dentistry Atlas of Pediatric Dentistry (http://depts.washington.edu/peddent/) and disk-deployed comprehensive textbook of pediatric dentistry that features approximately 3,500 frames and 2,500 images, including color clinical photographs, illustrations, and radiographs; There are also end-of-chapter quizzes, laboratory manuals, photo banks, and a scrollable index incorporated as features in the book. The purpose of this study--which is among a series of studies being conducted at the University of Washington--was to evaluate dental student perceptions regarding online/computer-deployed education. ⋯ Students strongly preferred the online textbook to a traditional text. There continues to be a small number of students who do not have access to a computer at home and whose computers are equipped with obsolete software. To optimize student access to the online program, it is important to plan for students to be able to use computers at the university and to program any online resource so that it is compatible with older browser software.
