ReviewDelamanid (OPC-67683) for treatment of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis.
The research and development of delamanid was carried out by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development and Commercialization (Osaka, Tokyo, Japan). It belongs to the group of nitroimidazoles. It inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acids, crucial component of the cell wall of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. ⋯ Its bactericidal activity was demonstrated in individuals with drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR- and XDR-TB). The safety and tolerability profile was good; the notified increased QT interval was not clinically relevant. It was approved for adults but ongoing clinical trials and clinical experiences have been proving its efficacy in the pediatric population.

ReviewImplications and emerging control strategies for ventilator-associated infections.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains a major burden to the healthcare system and intubated patients in intensive care units. In fact, VAP is responsible for at least 50% of prescribed antibiotics to patients who need mechanical ventilation. ⋯ These biofilms serve as a protective environment for bacterial colonies and provide enhanced resistance towards many antibiotics. This review presents and discusses an overview of current strategies to inhibit the colonization and formation of biofilm on endotracheal tubes, including antibiotic treatment, surface modification and antimicrobial agent incorporation onto endotracheal tube materials.

ReviewSpotlight on measles in Italy: why outbreaks of a vaccine-preventable infection continue in the 21st century.
Measles is a serious infectious disease that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Remarkable progress has been made through measles vaccination in reducing the number of people dying from measles. In the last years, concerns about the safety of vaccines have led to decline in immunization coverage rates and new outbreaks of measles in many European countries, including Italy. We believe that it is important to reinforce the message that measles vaccine is safe and highly effective through appropriate information campaigns and public awareness.
