Clinical outcomes and quality of life in children and adolescents with primary brain tumors treated with pencil beam scanning proton therapy.
Long-term treatment-related toxicity may substantially impact well-being, quality of life (QoL), and health of children/adolescents with brain tumors (CBTs). Strategies to reduce toxicity include pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PT). This study aims to report clinical outcomes and QoL in PBS-treated CBTs. ⋯ The outcome of CBTs was excellent after PBS. Few patients had late ≥G3 toxicity. Patients aged <5 years showed worse QoL and toxicity outcomes.

Cognitive functioning, patient health communication, and worry mediate pain predictive effects on health-related quality of life in youth with sickle cell disease.
The objective was to investigate the serial mediating effects of perceived cognitive functioning, patient health communication, and disease-specific worry in the relationship between pain and overall generic health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in youth with sickle cell disease (SCD) from the patient perspective. ⋯ Perceived cognitive functioning, patient health communication, and disease-specific worry explain in part the mechanism of pain predictive effects on overall generic HRQOL in youth with SCD. Identifying SCD-specific pain, perceived cognitive functioning, health communication, and disease-specific worry as predictor variables of overall generic HRQOL from the patient perspective may inform clinical interventions and future patient-centered clinical research.
