This paper presents a strategic analysis of the prevention of smoking in Spain. After a review of the situation of the epidemic and of the current prevention policies with the data available in 2019, it identifies the main problems to improve the prevention of smoking, while proposing strategies and key actions for the future. Considering as major objectives reducing the initiation of smoking and helping smokers quit, the different strategies of action and the key actions to be developed. ⋯ Some of them have followed a positive path for prevention in Spain but for others there is wide room for improvement. The MPOWER strategy of the WHO offers a guide for the development of the most effective tobacco control policies. In its light it is recommended to put emphasis on actions related to expanding smoke-free areas, to develop distance support services to stop smoking, to periodically carry out advertising campaigns of wide coverage to encourage quitting, to reinforce support for quitting in health care services, to finance pharmacological treatments, to expand the advertising ban to electronic devices that release nicotine, and to increase the tax burden on tobacco and other products delivering nicotine.

By mid-2015, an increase in the number of cases of microcephaly among newborns and neurologic disorders was detected in the Northwest of Brazil, which was possibly associated with Zika virus infection. Later on, this phenomenon was also observed in several Latin-American countries. In February 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) on this basis, declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. ⋯ The countries reporting most cases were France, Spain and the United Kingdom. In Spain, due to the high probability of case importation based on the close relationships with Latin-America, numerous measures were adopted to achieve a rapid response and an optimal control. Those included: the implementation of an active surveillance in collaboration with several experts, institutions and scientific societies; entomologic surveillance enhancement; the development of communication activities and recommendations for both healthcare workers and general population.

[Influenza vaccination coverage (2011-2014) in healthcare workers from two health departments of the Valencian Community and hospital services more vulnerable to the flu.]
Health care workers can transmit influenza to patients in health centers, therefore its vaccination is considered a preventive measure first order. The objective of this study was to know the coverage of vaccination against seasonal influenza in health professionals in two health departments of the Valencian Community (Torrevieja and Elx- Crevillent), in the seasons 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14. ⋯ Although they show an upward trend, vaccination coverage is low in health care personnel. Nurses are the best vaccinated. It would be appropriate to implement immunization strategies aimed specifically at services that, because of their activity, pose a greater risk to the patient.

[Divergent Trends in Suicide Mortality in Navarra and Spain: 2000-2015].
The aim of this study was to know the suicide mortality rates in Navarra and Spain and to compare their time trends during the period 2000-2015. ⋯ The rise in overall suicide rates observed in Spain since 2011, that was not observed in Navarre, could be influenced by the improvements in coding methods in several Spanish regions. However, this could not explain the decrease observed during the all period in men aged 25-44, that was even larger in Navarra.
