Behavioral evaluation of auditory function abnormalities in adult rats with normal hearing thresholds that were exposed to noise during early development.
Noise-exposed rat pups provide a model of early deprivation of sensory input to the central auditory system, allowing the study of developmental neuroplasticity. Our previous results have demonstrated that a brief exposure of rats to broadband noise (125 dB SPL 8 min, 14th postnatal day) at the onset of hearing resulted in an altered intensity perception and frequency discrimination in adulthood despite normal hearing thresholds. In this study, we assessed the gap-detection ability and possible presence of tinnitus- and hyperacusis-like behavior in adult rats after the same neonatal acoustic trauma, using measurements of the acoustic startle response (ASR) in quiet and noisy environments and its prepulse inhibition by gaps in noise (gap-PPI). ⋯ An increased sensitivity to continuous noise was manifested in all exposed rats by suppression of the ASR at significantly lower background noise levels than in the controls. This effect was particularly pronounced in rats with tinnitus-like behavior. Our results indicate that neonatal acoustic trauma, producing only a transient threshold shift, may produce permanent abnormalities in suprathreshold auditory functions and the development of tinnitus and hyperacusis-like behavior.

Extracts of the leaves of Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. Alleviate itch sensation via TSLP-dependent manner in mouse models of atopic dermatitis.
Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. commonly known as "Sandolbae" in Korean is a pear tree widely distributed across East Asia. Recent studies indicate that P. ussuriensis Maxim. leaves (PUL) have antipruritic effects. This study aimed to determine the effects of PUL extract and its fractions in decreasing the itch sensation and skin lesions in two distinct animal models of atopic dermatitis (AD) induced by dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) or house dust mite (HDM). ⋯ Specific subfractions of the PUL strongly inhibited the increase in calcium levels induced by TSLP. In addition, the specific subfraction of PUL inhibited the TSLP-induced increase in calcium levels in cultured mouse dorsal root ganglia neurons. Thus, our results showed that the PUL extract could be effective for alleviating pruritus, and the antipruritic effects were exerted probably via the inhibition of the TSLP pathway in peripheral sensory neurons governing the itch sensation in AD.

Breathing with the mind: Effects of motor imagery on breath-hold performance.
We aimed at studying the effect of Motor Imagery (MI), i.e., the mental representation of a movement without executing it, on breath-holding performance. Classical guidelines for efficient MI interventions advocate for a congruent MI practice with regards to the requirements of the physical performance, specifically in terms of physiological arousal. We specifically aimed at studying whether an incongruent form of MI practice might enhance the breath-hold performance. ⋯ Performance was improved during MI of breathing (73.06 s ± 24.53) compared to both MI of breath-hold (70.57 s ± 18.15) and the control condition (67.67 s ± 19.27) (p < 0.05). The mechanisms underlying breath-hold performance improvements during MI of breathing remain uncertain. MI of breathing might participate to decrease the threat perception associated with breath-holding, presumably due to psychological and physiological effects associated with the internal simulation of a breathing body state.

To explore the role of strong negative emotions in spinal nociception, we evaluated the effect of fear-relevant videos of small animals on the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) and reflex-related pain perception in healthy subjects with a specific phobia of small animals. Twenty healthy subjects with a specific phobia of small animals diagnosed according to DSM-V criteria were included in this study. The NWR was evoked in the lower limb by stimulating the sural nerve and recording EMG activity in the biceps femoris. ⋯ Emotions induced by phobic video viewing increase the alertness devoted to the defensive reaction by emphasizing nociceptive responses independently from pain perception. The NWR may represent an interesting tool for exploring the interaction between strong negative emotions and spinal nociception. A better understanding of this mechanism may be a theoretical prerequisite for the optimization of pain management in several chronic pain syndromes.

Access to voluntary running wheel exercise: Prevention of anxiety-like behavior in chronically stressed rats, but potentiation of ethanol intake/preference.
The current study tested the effect of voluntary running on future anxiety-like behavior, physiological response to stress, and ethanol intake/preference, while including a chronically stressed group and healthy group housed conspecifics. When given concurrently, voluntary running reduces ethanol intake, though it is unknown what effect voluntary running will have on anxiety-like behavior, corticosterone response to stress, and ethanol intake/preference when exercise is allowed only prior to ethanol access. Adolescent male Long Evans rats arrived in the lab at postnatal day (PND) 21. ⋯ In regard to ethanol intake and preference, running (irrespective of housing group) increased intake at the 30 min time point and preference at the 24 h time point. Altogether, these data show that access to voluntary exercise was successful in reducing anxiety-like behavior, but withdrawal of exercise access appeared to enhance ethanol intake/preference. We suggest that these data reflect hedonic substitution.
