This study aimed to explore the anti-obesity potential of blackcurrant anthocyanins (BCA) and investigate the correlation between the gut microbiota and the BCA-induced beneficial effects. ⋯ This study demonstrated that BCA supplement could be a beneficial treatment for preventing HFD-induced obesity by targeting microbiota.

Inflammatory responses to obesity, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) activation, downregulate mitochondrial function and interfere with adipocyte browning, an important component of energy expenditure. This study investigates the impact of apigenin (Apg), a natural flavonoid with anti-inflammatory properties, on adipocyte browning in the presence of IL-1β. ⋯ Apg plays a protective role against inflammation-induced suppression of adipocyte browning by dampening inflammation and activating the COX2/PGE2 axis for uncoupling protein 1 induction via EP4 activation. These data unravel the novel therapeutic values of Apg for treating obesity via adipocyte browning stimulation.

In the Natural Medicines database, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is classified as possibly effective for the treatment of hypertension. Patients with hypertension frequently have a significant deficiency of the antioxidant CoQ10. Furthermore, reactive oxygen species are overproduced in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) during the cardiovascular regulation of hypertension in vivo. However, the molecular mechanisms by which CoQ10 modulates cardiovascular functions in the NTS are unclear. In this study, the effects of CoQ10 on superoxide generation, downstream NO signaling in the NTS, and blood pressure were evaluated in rats with fructose-induced hypertension. ⋯ Oral CoQ10 decreases blood pressure by negatively regulating fructose-induced NADPH oxidase levels, abolishing ROS generation, reducing p38 phosphorylation, and enhancing the Akt-nNOS pathway in the NTS. These results support the beneficial effects of CoQ10 in oxidative stressassociated hypertension.

Maternal obesity programs metabolic dysfunction in offspring, increasing their susceptibility to obesity and metabolic diseases in later life. Moreover, pregnancy and lactation are associated with many metabolic adaptations, yet it is unclear how diet-induced maternal obesity may interrupt these processes. ⋯ Diet-induced maternal obesity and consumption of an obesogenic maternal diet results in differential metabolic and gut microbial adaptations to pregnancy and lactation; these maladaptations may be directly involved in maternal programming of offspring susceptibility to obesity.

Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy and risk of childhood asthma: A meta-analysis of prospective studies.
Mounting evidence suggests that maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy may be associated with development of childhood asthma, but the results are still inconsistent. A dose-response meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively summarize evidence on the association of maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy with the risk of childhood asthma. ⋯ This dose-response meta-analysis suggested a U-shaped relationship between maternal blood 25(OH)D levels and risk of childhood asthma. Further studies are needed to confirm the association.
