Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a prospective randomized clinical trial.
The essence of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program is the multimodal approach, and many authors have demonstrated safety and feasibility in fast-track bariatric surgery. ⋯ The implementation of an ERAS protocol was associated with lower postoperative pain, reduced incidence of postoperative nausea or vomiting, lower levels of acute phase reactants, and earlier hospital discharge. Complications, reinterventions, mortality, and readmission rates were similar to that obtained after a standard care protocol.

Randomized Controlled TrialPulmonary recruitment maneuver reduces pain after laparoscopic bariatric surgery: a randomized controlled clinical trial.
Pulmonary recruitment maneuver (PRM) at the end of laparoscopic gynecologic surgery has been shown to reduce postoperative pain. This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial aimed to investigate postoperative pain (primary endpoint) and nausea when performing a ventilator-piloted PRM at the end of laparoscopic bariatric surgery. ⋯ A ventilator-piloted PRM reduced postoperative pain intensity and opioid requirement after laparoscopic bariatric surgery. The heterogeneity of the study population and the large number of hospital staff involved indicate good generalizability of the results.

Randomized Controlled TrialComprehensive simulation-enhanced training curriculum for an advanced minimally invasive procedure: a randomized controlled trial.
There is no comprehensive simulation-enhanced training curriculum to address cognitive, psychomotor, and nontechnical skills for an advanced minimally invasive procedure. ⋯ Completion of the SET curriculum resulted in superior training outcomes, compared with conventional surgery training. Implementation of the SET curriculum can standardize training for an advanced minimally invasive procedure and can ensure that comprehensive proficiency milestones are met before exposure to patient care.

Randomized Controlled TrialPostoperative pain after conventional laparoscopic versus single-port sleeve gastrectomy: a prospective, randomized, controlled pilot study.
Laparoscopic approach is the gold standard for surgical treatment of morbid obesity. The single-port (SP) approach has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective technique for the treatment of morbid obesity in several case control studies. ⋯ In selected patients, SP surgery presented less postoperative pain in sleeve gastrectomy compared with the conventional laparoscopic approach with similar surgical results.

Randomized Controlled TrialMelatonin premedication improves quality of recovery following bariatric surgery - a double blind placebo controlled prospective study.
Melatonin has hypnotic, sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, and is a widely used sleep agent. ⋯ Use of melatonin premedication improved the quality of recovery 1 day after bariatric surgery as measured by the QoR-15, specifically the quality of sleep and pain levels. Melatonin may serve as a premedication, especially when other options, like benzodiazepines are not recommended.
