Comparative StudyLeft atrial volume quantification using cardiac MRI in atrial fibrillation: comparison of the Simpson's method with biplane area-length, ellipse, and three-dimensional methods.
Left atrial volume is an important predictor of future arrhythmias, and it can be assessed by several different methods. Simpson's method is well accepted as a reference standard, although no standardization exists for cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We aimed to compare the estimations of left atrial volumes obtained by the Simpson's method with three other methods. ⋯ The biplane area-length method can be used for left atrial volume measurement when the Simpson's method cannot be performed. If these two methods are not feasible, then all methods are highly reproducible and can be used, but should not be used interchangeably for follow-up studies.

Tract-based spatial statistics of diffusion tensor imaging in hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum reveals widespread white matter changes.
We aimed to investigate white matter diffusivity abnormalities in hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC) patients in relation with electrophysiological findings. ⋯ Tract-based spatial statistics of diffusion tensor imaging revealed a more widespread involvement of white matter in HSP-TCC patients than has previously been detected by conventional MRI. This may explain the broad spectrum of electrophysiological and neurological abnormalities that complicate hereditary spastic paraplegia in these patients.

The value of diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient quantification in the diagnosis of perforated and nonperforated appendicitis.
We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and differentiation of perforated and nonperforated appendicitis cases, with histopathologic correlation. ⋯ DW-MRI and ADC quantification are effective in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, both in perforated and nonperforated cases.

Endovascular treatment of cranial aneurysms with the pipeline flow-diverting stent: preliminary mid-term results.
We aimed to present our initial experience with a new self-expanding flow diverter device designed for wide-neck aneurysm treatment, assess its safety for intracranial deployment and efficacy of occlusion at mid-term follow-up. ⋯ The Pipeline flow-diverting stent represents an important advancement in endovascular therapy for cerebral aneurysms. Standard endovascular techniques are typically not suitable for these types of aneurysms. The device targets primary parent vessel reconstruction rather than endosaccular occlusion to achieve exclusion of the aneurysm and maintain a relatively high occlusion rate at six months.

Case ReportsHybrid SPECT-CT with 99mTc-labeled red blood cell in a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: added value over planar scintigraphy.
Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare clinical entity characterized by multiple venous malformations (hemangiomas) of the skin and gastrointestinal tract. These hemangiomas usually cause episodes of occult gastrointestinal bleeding leading to iron deficiency anemia, and also carry a significant potential for serious hemorrhage. The 99mechnetium (99mTc)-labeled red blood cell scintigraphy has traditionally been utilized in the localization of occult bleeding sites in patients with suspected vascular malformations, angiodysplasia, and Meckel’s diverticulum. We report the incremental value of 99mTc-labeled red blood cell hybrid single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) over planar scintigraphy alone in a 12-year-old female patient with BRBNS.
