To translate and validate the Zurich Chronic Middle Ear Inventory (ZCMEI-21) for the English language in order to provide an English instrument to assess health-related quality of life in chronic otitis media (COM). ⋯ The ZCMEI-21-E is a new validated questionnaire that provides clinicians with a short, comprehensive and reliable instrument to quantify health-related quality of life in patients suffering from COM. The ZCMEI-21-E may be of use in clinical routine as well as in outcome research and monitoring.

National estimations of airway foreign bodies in children in the United States, 2000 to 2009.
Identify risk factors associated with airway foreign bodies in children in the United States and report observed trends over time. ⋯ Our findings confirm previous findings and identified that the diagnosis of airway foreign bodies in children were associated with male gender, age <5 years, lack of private insurance and geographic location in an urban setting. Further investigation may be warranted to provide clarity on other factors found to have increased association with mortality for quality improvement.

Septoplasty versus non-surgical management for nasal obstruction due to a deviated nasal septum in adults: A modelling study of cost-effectiveness.
The objective of this study was to demonstrate how decision-analytic modelling can help to determine circumstances under which surgery may become cost-effective, using septoplasty as an example. ⋯ This study shows that the known cost difference between treatments can be used as the starting point to determine beneficial effects needed for cost-effectiveness of surgical interventions. The effect required by septoplasty from a healthcare perspective seems potentially achievable, meaning that it would be useful to perform an RCT assessing the actual benefits of septoplasty.

To validate the use of Cormack-Lehane and Modified Cormack-Lehane scoring systems to classify patterns of hypopharyngeal airway visualization seen during awake flexible laryngoscopy among patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. ⋯ We propose a 5-Grade Vocal Cord Grading System that builds upon existing grading systems to allow for efficient and reliable communication of hypopharyngeal airway examination during awake fiberoptic laryngoscopy.
