The aim of the study was to quantitatively measure the effect of teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using a real-time audiovisual feedback manikin system on first-year medical student's CPR performance. ⋯ The use of audiovisual feedback techniques to teach CPR improves skill acquisition with significant improvement in crucial prognosis-improving parameters, as tested in a "no-feedback" test scenario.

Difficulty with tracheal intubation is the most common cause of serious adverse respiratory events during anesthesia. Cricothyrotomy is a life-saving procedure that is seldom performed by anesthesiologists. Anesthesiology residents are traditionally trained to perform cricothyrotomy with artificial mannequins and exposed larynx models from animals. These models lack the tissue feel of performing a cricothyrotomy on a patient with difficult neck anatomy. To improve the training experience, we developed a novel training model for cricothyrotomy using a porcine larynx, which incorporates ultrasonographic examination to identify the cricothyroid membrane, and permits varying degrees of difficulty. ⋯ Use of the porcine trachea with overlying animal skin and fat provides an effective partial-task trainer for open and percutaneous surgical airway education and lends itself to integration of ultrasound imaging for real-time identification of laryngeal and tracheal anatomy.

During basic life support (BLS) training, instructors assess learners' cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and correct errors to ensure high-quality performance. This study aimed to investigate certified BLS instructors' assessments of CPR skills. ⋯ Certified BLS instructors assess CPR skills poorly. Particularly, improper chest compression depth and rescue breaths are not identified.

Physician Versus Nonphysician Instruction: Evaluating an Expert Curriculum-Competent Facilitator Model for Simulation-Based Central Venous Catheter Training.
Healthcare simulation supports educational opportunities while maintaining patient safety. To reduce costs and increase the availability of training, a randomized controlled study evaluated central venous catheter (CVC) insertion training in the simulation laboratory with nonphysician competent facilitators (NPCFs) as instructors. ⋯ An introductory CVC curriculum can be taught to novice learners by carefully trained and supported NPCFs and achieve skill and knowledge outcomes similar to learners taught by physicians.

Association of the Number of a Simulation Faculty With the Implementation of Simulation-Based Education.
Although the implementation of simulation-based education (SBE) is essential for emergency medicine residency programs (EMRPs), little is known about the factors associated with its degree of SBE implementation in EMRPs. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate factors associated with SBE implementation in EMRPs. We hypothesized that the number of the simulation faculty was associated with the degree of SBE implementation. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first Japanese study to demonstrate that the number of the simulation faculty at a program is independently associated with a robust SBE implementation.
