The rigorous evaluation of simulation in healthcare to improve resuscitations and team functioning can be challenging. Statistical process control (SPC) charts present a unique methodology to enable statistical rigor when evaluating simulation. This article presents a brief overview of SPC charts and its advantages over traditional before and after methodologies, followed by an exemplar using SPC to evaluate an in situ team training program with embedded interprofessional education sessions.

Team-based training and simulation can improve patient safety, by improving communication, decision making, and performance of team members. Currently, there is no general consensus on whether or not a specific assessment tool is better adapted to evaluate teamwork in obstetric emergencies. The purpose of this qualitative systematic review was to find the tools available to assess team effectiveness in obstetric emergencies. ⋯ More work needs to be conducted to establish the validity of teamwork tools for nontechnical skills, and the development of an ideal tool is warranted. Further studies are required to assess how outcomes, such as performance and patient safety, are influenced when using these tools.

Debriefing is a critical component in the process of learning through healthcare simulation. This critical review examines the timing, facilitation, conversational structures, and process elements used in healthcare simulation debriefing. Debriefing occurs either after (postevent) or during (within-event) the simulation. ⋯ These are divided here into the following 3 categories: essential elements, conversational techniques/educational strategies, and debriefing adjuncts. This review provides both novice and advanced simulation educators with an overview of various methods of conducting healthcare simulation debriefing. Future research will investigate which debriefing methods are best for which contexts and for whom, and also explore how lessons from simulation debriefing translate to debriefing in clinical practice.

Current simulation training initiatives predominantly occur in uniprofessional silos and do little to integrate different disciplines working in the operating room (OR). The objective of this review was to determine the current status of work describing simulation for full OR multidisciplinary teams including barriers to conducting OR multidisciplinary team training and factors contributing to successful courses. We found a total of 18 articles from 10 research groups. ⋯ Measures of performance involved a variety of both technical and nontechnical ratings of the simulations. Challenges to conducting the simulations included recruitment, model realism, and financial costs. Future work should focus on how best to overcome the barriers to implementation of team training interventions for full OR teams, particularly on how to engage senior staff to aid recruitment.
