Previous studies have shown that lung squamous cell carcinoma has higher ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography (PET) than adenocarcinoma. We hypothesized that histological subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma were also different in ¹⁸F-FDG uptake. ⋯ The histological subtypes of lung adenocarcinomas differ in GLUT-1 expression and ¹⁸F-FDG uptake on the PET/CT scan, suggesting that histological subtyping not only has morphological but also biological implications.

In computed tomography lung cancer screening programs, up to 30% of all resections are futile. ⋯ A preoperative PET scan in participants with an inconclusive nonsurgical workup is not recommended because of the very low NPV, but after a conclusive nonsurgical workup, the resection rate for benign disease can be decreased by 72%.

Extended cervical mediastinoscopy (ECM) is a method for sampling aortopulmonary window (APW) mediastinal lymph nodes. In this study, the efficacy of integrated positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) was compared with ECM for the detection of APW lymph node metastasis. ⋯ ECM, which is an effective technique used in the determination of APW lymph node metastasis, was enough to rule out nodal disease with negative predictive value. PET/CT does not reduce the need for invasive procedures in detecting APW lymph node metastasis.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a fatal neoplasm related to asbestos exposure. We investigated the effects of pleurectomy/decortication (P/D), hyperthermic pleural lavage with povidone-iodine and adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. ⋯ In our experience, P/D combined with hyperthermic pleural lavage with povidone-iodine and adjuvant chemotherapy is a well-tolerated multimodality treatment associated with low morbidity and mortality. This multimodality treatment compares favorably with classical trimodality regimens involving chemotherapy, extrapleural pneumonectomy, and adjuvant radiotherapy, in our experience. Study limitations include small sample size, nonrandomization, and patient selection bias.
