The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the newly developed handheld hemoglobinmeter (TrueHb) by comparing its performance against and an automated five-part hematology analyzer, Sysmex counter XT 1800i (Sysmex). ⋯ These results suggested a strong positive correlation between the two measurements devices. It is thus concluded that TrueHb is a good point-of-care testing tool for estimating hemoglobin.

A comparison of fibrinogen measurement using TEG(®) functional fibrinogen and Clauss in cardiac surgery patients.
Viscoelastic methods of estimating fibrinogen measure clot formation under platelet inhibition; these methods are gaining in popularity because of their convenience and speed. The aim of this study was to compare the results of the TEG(®) functional fibrinogen (FF) assay with the Clauss fibrinogen method in a group of patients presenting for cardiac surgery and to assess whether they gave equivalent results. ⋯ The TEG(®) FF does not produce results equivalent to those of the Clauss fibrinogen regardless of platelet count.

Bleeding symptoms in severe thrombocytopenia range from mild to severe. The aim of this in vitro study was to improve blood clotting and protect against fibrinolysis in reconstituted severe thrombocytopenia blood. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that combined spiking of blood with fibrinogen and FEIBA may be enough to correct the clot formation disorder in severe thrombocytopenia, whereas in thrombocytopenia and blood dilution, additive inhibition of fibrinolysis may be needed.

Cardiovascular disease and thrombotic events have emerged as major causes of mortality in people living with HIV. Activated platelets play a key role in both inflammation and thrombosis. Haematology analysers measure a variety of platelet indices, which could be surrogate markers of platelet activation. Flow cytometry offers the discrimination of platelet subpopulations and evaluation of the activation status of platelets. This study aimed to measure platelet indices in untreated HIV infection and to evaluate their relationship with markers of immune activation and disease progression. ⋯ Platelet indices may offer a rapid and affordable method for monitoring platelet activation and disease progression in patients with HIV.
