Effects of continuous erector spinae plane block on postoperative pain in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a randomized controlled study.
The aim of this prospective, randomized, controlled study was to evaluate the analgesic effect of ultrasonography (USG) guided continuous erector spinae plane block (ESPB) for postoperative analgesia in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). ⋯ This study shows that USG-guided continuous ESPB provides adequate analgesia following VATS as part of multimodal analgesia. Continuous ESPB significantly reduced opioid consumption and opioid-related side effects compared to those in the Control Group.

Complete pleural symphysis is predicted by a blunted costophrenic angle.
Complete pleural symphysis from adhesions is a troublesome intraoperative finding. A blunted costophrenic angle without pleural effusion is an indicator of prior pleural disease; however, the diagnostic accuracy of blunted costophrenic angles for complete pleural symphysis is unclear. This study to determine whether complete pleural symphysis is predicted by the finding of a blunted costophrenic angle. ⋯ Complete pleural symphysis was predicted by a blunted costophrenic angle with moderate sensitivity and high specificity, accuracy, and positive likelihood ratio. Evaluation of the costophrenic angle could, therefore, be an efficient, simple, and convenient screening tool.

Adjusted preoperative variables to predict perioperative red blood cell transfusion in coronary artery bypass grafting.
The variables for predicting blood transfusion perioperatively are not completely clear in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients. ⋯ The comprehensive model combined with all variables of predicting intraoperative and postoperative RBC transfusion is feasible for predicting perioperative RBC transfusion.

Case ReportsThoracic endometriosis-related non-catamenial pneumothorax with peculiar histological findings.
Thoracic endometriosis-related non-catamenial pneumothorax is a rare entity whose pathogenesis is still less unclear than catamenial pneumothorax one. Hormonal therapy and/or talc pleurodesis are not sufficient for successful management. Surgical videothoracoscopic resection has a central role in the treatment. ⋯ At third operation, unusual histological findings on diaphragmatic and pulmonary specimens were disclosed. These results could partially clarify the presentation of some complicated misdiagnosed cases. More has to be investigated about pathogenesis of the disease and influence of the hormonal balance on it.

Risk estimation model for acute kidney injury defined by KDIGO classification after heart valve replacement surgery.
Risk prediction for postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) has a great clinical value to achieve early prevention strategies for AKI after cardiac surgery. We aimed to identify the patients at risk of postoperative AKI and to create patient risk group for AKI using a simple risk estimation model in patients undergoing heart valve replacement surgery. ⋯ The risk estimation model is a useful tool to identify the patients at risk and to create patient risk groups for postoperative AKI defined by KDIGO after heart valve replacement surgery.
