ReviewNonintubated thoracoscopic surgery for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer.
Recent advances in the management of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer have focused on less invasive anesthetic and surgical techniques. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery without tracheal intubation is an evolving technique to provide a safe alternative with less short-term complication and faster postoperative recovery. The purpose of this review was to explore the latest developments and future prospects of nonintubated thoracoscopic surgery for early lung cancer. ⋯ Nonintubated thoracoscopic surgery is a safe and feasible minimally invasive alternative surgery for early non-small cell lung cancer. Faster recovery and less short-term complication are potential benefits of this approach.

Novel quantitative and objective structured assessment of technical skill for slip knotting.
Currently, no quantitative and objective method has been established for evaluating competencies in basic surgical techniques. The aim of this study was to develop a structured assessment tool for slip knotting and verify how well current board certification system discriminates the level of basic surgical skill. ⋯ This novel quantitative and objective assessment tool for technical skill in slip knotting was found to be valid to examine the skill for slip knotting. In this study, current board certification discriminated the level of basic surgical skill. However, it could not distinguish extremely low scorers perfectly. Some board-certified surgeons showed poor technical competency, especially those without off-the-job training.

Mid-term results of valve repairs for atrial functional mitral and tricuspid regurgitations.
This study aimed to determine the mid-term outcomes of surgical valve repairs for atrial functional mitral regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation in patients with atrial fibrillation. ⋯ Our results suggest that mitral and tricuspid valve repairs lead to reductions in regurgitations and heart failure symptoms in patients with atrial functional mitral and tricuspid regurgitations. The preoperative left atrial size should be recognized as an important risk factor of postoperative cardiovascular events.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIntercostal block vs. epidural analgesia in thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery: a randomized trial.
To explore the best strategy for combatting pain after thoracoscopic lobectomy for cancer. ⋯ Although our limited sample size compromised our ability to draw definitive conclusions, intercostal nerve block followed by high-dose oral celecoxib seems to be an option for patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer.

Efficacy of new multimodal preventive measures for post-operative deep sternal wound infection.
Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a critical complication of cardiovascular surgery. This study aimed to confirm the efficacy of new, multimodal preventive measures for post-operative DSWI. ⋯ We observed a marked decrease in the incidence of DSWI after the implementation of multimodal preventive measures. The risk factors for DSWI were BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and operation time ≥ 8 h.
