The World Health Organization has declared the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a global public health emergency. Despite the predominating respiratory symptoms occurring in COVID-19, thrombosis can occur in some patients, with morbidity and mortality increase due to the respiratory worsening. This article reports the case of a 62-year-old man with a flu-like illness that was diagnosed as COVID-19 by RT-PCR of SARS-CoV-2. ⋯ Intestinal ischemia was evident, due to the absence of flow in the superior mesenteric artery and jejunal branches. Embolectomy and enterectomy were performed and they resulted in a favorable outcome, with clinical improvement. This case adds data to the limited literature on extrapulmonary complications of COVID-19, notably those related to thromboembolic events.

Infections caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) are still associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment failures of cefazolin (CFZ) have been reported and probably related to the inoculum effect. New treatments for severe MSSA infections are needed and ceftaroline fosamil (CPT) could be an option. ⋯ All patients experienced microbiological and clinical cure with CPT, which was used as monotherapy in 4 and in combination with daptomycin in another. One patient discontinued CPT due to neutropenia on day 23 of treatment. In patients with MSSA BSI failing current therapy, CPT could be a good therapeutic option.

Observational Study
[Comparison between the first and second COVID-19 wave of patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit in Argentina].
the information regarding characteristics and ventilatory results comparing the first (W1) and the second wave (W2) in Argentina are limited. The main objective of this study was to describe general characteristics and ventilatory variables in COVID-19 patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and compare differences between waves. Secondarily, factors associated with mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) were studied. ⋯ During W2 the patients were younger. It was possible to achieve ventilatory mechanics more adjusted to a protective ventilation strategy. In conclusion, in the patients studied, age and ΔP were independent predictors of mortality.

The present report describes the case of a 23-year old pregnant woman who was in the 36.5th week of gestation of her second pregnancy. She was attended at the emergency room because of dry cough and progressive dyspnea, in association with headache and myalgia. The nasopharyngeal swab for SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was positive. ⋯ Lactic acidosis is not a component of this syndrome. Nor can it be ascribed to a mild disease by SARS-Cov-2. It probably responded to a summation of causes, including hyperproduction of lactic acid during labor, as well as its reduced clearance because of liver dysfunction related to HELLP syndrome.

A 40-year-old woman was scheduled to receive chemotherapy for a high-risk common B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), diagnosed 10 months earlier in the wake of lower limb bruising and petechiae, and metrorrhagia. At that time, she had thrombocytopenia and a normal transvaginal gynecological ultrasound. Upon admission, she complained of a 3-month history of incapacitating left groin pain radiated to the thigh, and right lower quadrant abdominal pain associated with diarrhea. ⋯ Malignant psoas syndrome is caused by neoplastic infiltration of the muscle. The differential diagnosis should be made with a psoas abscess, which may arise from typhlitis if secondary. We have not been able to find records of cervical cancer as second primary cancer after ALL.
