Our objective was to assess levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices against COVID-19. A total of 3774 persons were surveyed between September 18 and October 16, 2020. Eighty% resided in Buenos Aires City or Buenos Aires Province: 58% had completed tertiary education; 72% worked either independently or as employees in the public or the private sector; 51% used a prepaid health care plan, 34% were covered by a trade union-based health system, and near 10% used the public health services. ⋯ The medical staff was the preferred source of information; 44% of respondents felt protected by their health system; 28% would only seek healthcare when feeling very sick. There was a high degree of compliance with most protection measures, except for attendance to social events in poorly ventilated spaces (50%). The results of these studies contribute to establishing communication strategies for the prevention and control of COVID-19 and thus deal more efficiently with eventual outbreaks of the disease.

Last decades, a broad spectrum of inhaled devices (ID) had been developed to enhance efficacy and reduce adverse events. The correct use of IDs is a critical issue for controlling obstructive respiratory diseases. There is no recommendation on inhalation therapy in Argentina. ⋯ Metered-dose inhalers must be prescribed to patients who cannot generate a high inspiratory flow and dry powders to those who can generate an energetic inspiratory flow. We reviewed the use of different IDs in patients with cystic fibrosis and under mechanical ventilation. The individual choice of an ID will be based on several variables like clinical status, age, previous experience, patient preference, drug availability, and correct use of the device.

Cardiovascular disorders represent the leading cause of death in dialysis patients. Alterations of bone and mineral metabolism (BMM) and vascular calcifications play a fundamental role in it. The objective of this study was to evaluate the predictive role on cardiovascular mortality of the measurement of biomarkers of BMM and vascular calcifications. ⋯ It was also an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality adjusted for age, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, aortic calcifications, time spent on dialysis and follow-up time (adjusted OR = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.06-2.96; p = 0.028). The vascular calcifications quantified from the Adragao score were the only independent predictor of long-term cardiovascular mortality. This score represents a simple, useful and superior tool to the biomarkers of BMM.

We performed a single center retrospective study in patients wi th pulmonary embolism (PE) undergoing catheter directed thrombolysis (CDT) from 2014 to 2020. Efficacy was defined by mean pulmonary pressure drop, and safety was assessed by intracranial and severe bleeding (defined by GUSTO). Forty-three patients were included, aged 64 (56-79) years old, 5 (12%) with shock, most with right ventricle dilation (95%) and bilateral PE (95%) or unilateral (5%) in patients with only one functional lung. ⋯ One patient (2%) experienced severe bleeding, while 5 (12%) presented access site bleeding, and 3 (7%) required blood transfusions. In-hospital mortality was 12% but only one case (2%) due to PE. Our results are similar to previously reported studies.

Individuals with malignancies and COVID-19 have a lower survival compared with the general population. However, the information about the impact of COVID-19 on the whole hematological population is scarce. We aimed to describe the 30th day overall survival (OS) after COVID-19 infection in patients with a hematological disease in Argentina. ⋯ In individuals with the three factors, the 30-day OS was 49.6% while the 30-day OS in those without those factors was 100%. Patients with hematological diseases have a higher mortality than the general population. This group represents a challenge and requires careful decision-making of the treatment in order not to compromise the chances of cure.
