Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social cognition and communication, restricted interests, and stereotyped behaviors. It is often associated with sensory dysfunctions, other neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, epilepsy and/or sleep disorders. ⋯ Taking into account this dichotomy of interests, we must think about the different stages of life, such as early intervention, school inclusion, bullying, associated mental and medical disorders, lack of group belonging, job opportunities and the aging. Only by becoming aware of each of them can we achieve a better quality of life for people with autism and their families.

Inborn errors of metabolism constitute a growing group of rare diseases with usual neurological impact. Heterogeneous in clinical and biochemical aspects, its diagnosis and treatment are difficult. ⋯ The neuropediatrician's suspicion in different clinical situations is very relevant. This article aims to be a practical contribution to facilitate their recognition.

Sleep is the main activity of the developing brain and indispensable for the maturation of the central nervous system. Sleep habits are influenced by biological, social and cultural factors and play a role in learning and memory processes. It is estimated that 25-50% of children have sleep difficulties. ⋯ Sleep disorders double their incidence in children with neurological disorders, with a bidirectional reciprocal causal link. They are classified into: insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, centrally caused hypersomnolence disorders, circadian cycle disorders, parasomnias, sleep-related movement disorders, and others. Despite the scientific evidence of the importance of sleep in early childhood, a high percentage of children do not comply with the recommended hours of sleep, which reflects the importance of training the pediatrician in this problem, which has increased during the pandemic.

Direct oral anticoagulants have emerged as the drugs that have changed the management of the antithrombotic treatment in the last 15 years. Their advantages, like a more friendly way of anticoagulation and their lower risk of bleeding, especially in the brain, have positioned these new anticoagulants as the first drug of choice in the two most frequent indications of anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation, and the venous thromboembolic disease. However, not all the patients can receive these agents, not all the direct oral anticoagulants have the same characteristics, and most importantly, not all the diseases with an indication of an anticoagulant drug can be treated with them. ⋯ This position paper, from a group of experts in anticoagulation in Argentina, can help the general practitioner in the daily use of direct oral anticoagulants based on the new evidence and the experience of a wide group of professionals. The way we relate to the anticoagulant treatment has changed in the last years. The doctors who work with them must also do so.

This review focuses on four interrelated teams and research lines that form the basis for new research on the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the Marcus Autism Center, in Atlanta (US). These themes probe typical social behavior and brain development from birth, and disruptions thereof in babies later diagnosed with ASD. ⋯ This science is opening a world of opportunities to optimize children's outcomes despite the genetic liabilities that they are born with. It provides the scientific grounding for new community-viable solutions for increasing access to early interventions using treatments that scaffold and strengthen infant-caregiver interactions, which is the platform for early brain development.
