Observational Study
[COVID-19 pandemic: outcomes and mortality in inpatients related to vaccination].
Different COVID-19 vaccines were developed in a short time after the beginning of pandemics, reducing mortality, especially in high risk population. This was demonstrated in several studies, mostly retrospective or based in mathematical models. The objective was to compare mortality in inpatients with COVID-19 related to vaccination. ⋯ This study constitutes a starting point for developing other investigations and raising awareness of medical community and people about the beneficial effects of vaccination.

there is evidence on the effectiveness and safety of tocilizumab (TZC) used in combination with systemic corticosteroids for severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia treatment. The purpose of this study was to describe epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory features as well as clinical outcome of patients receiving this combination therapy compared with those receiving only corticosteroids. ⋯ we were able to demonstrate its efficacy in reducing inflammatory biomarkers and a trend towards fewer days of hospitalization, with no impact on mortality.

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) for the histological diagnosis of occupying lesions in the pancreas as opposed to tru-cut needle biopsy to obtain tissue for analysis has been associated with a lower incidence of post-procedure complications, with almost immediate recovery and no need for hospital stay. Nevertheless, the question of the diagnostic effectiveness of percutaneous computed axial tomography (CT)-guided FNA in solid pancreatic lesions has been raised. The aim of this study was to confirm the diagnostic effectivity of percutaneous CT-guided FNA in pancreatic space-occupying lesions and to assess short-term complications. ⋯ Post-FNA morbidity was observed in four patients, consisting of epigastric pain in two and abdominal wall hematoma in two other patients. Percutaneous CT-guided FNA of pancreatic space-occupying lesions was found to be a good, minimally invasive and safe method with low morbidity. The presence of the pathologist in the procedure allowed for immediate cytological diagnosis.

Coronavirus disease-19 has emerged as a devastating global public health crisis. An increased frequency of arterial and venous thrombosis was observed in COVID-19 infection. The objective of this study was to describe the thromboembolic complications of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and their evolution. ⋯ Of the patients admitted to intensive care, 45.1% required mechanical ventilation. Overall mortality was 4.3%, significantly higher in intensive care patients than in the general hospital ward (29% vs. 1.3%; p < 0.0001). Patients requiring hospitalization due to infection secondary to COVID-19 have a high rate of thromboembolic events despite the use of thromboprophylaxis with heparin, generating a negative prognostic impact on the survival of patients admitted to intensive care.

The aim of this study was to extend our knowledge of the genetic background of Argentinean pediatric patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) applying a next generation sequencing (NGS) panel. ⋯ Genetic diagnosis was made in 39% of patients. We emphasize the importance of considering mosaic variants, copy number variants and hereditary forms when designing and interpreting molecular studies, to optimize diagnosis and management of patients. Approximately 42% of the detected variants were novel, expanding the knowledge of the molecular basis of DEEs in Latin-American patients.
