The maternal mortality ratio in Pakistan remains high at between 350 and 500 per 100,000 live births, while the neonatal mortality ratio is 50 per 1000 live births. This paper examines the trends in maternal and neonatal mortality in Pakistan and looks at why slow progress has been made in attempts to achieve safe motherhood. Despite numerous initiatives, it is uncertain whether Pakistan will achieve Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 by 2015.

To review the effect of the number of embryos transferred on the outcome of in vitro fertilization (IVF), to provide guidelines on the number of embryos to transfer in IVF-embryo transfer (ET) in order to optimize healthy live births and minimize multiple pregnancies. ⋯ Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. The quality of evidence reported in this document has been described using the Evaluation of Evidence criteria outlined in the Report of the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Exam (Table 1).

Randomized Controlled TrialRopivacaine abdominal wound infiltration and peritoneal spraying at cesarean delivery for preemptive analgesia.
To determine whether ropivacaine infiltration into all layers of the abdominal cesarean wound and spraying of the peritoneum decreases postoperative pain. ⋯ Ropivacaine wound infiltration and peritoneal spraying during cesarean delivery under general anesthetic reduces severe pain and need for opioids.
