Aloe vera and Vitis vinifera have been traditionally used as wound healing agents. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of aloe emodin and resveratrol in the burn wound healing procedure. Burn wounds are common in developed and developing countries, however, in developing countries, the incidence of severe complications is higher and financial resources are limited. ⋯ The levels of IL-1β in the exudates of the burn wound area of the treated mice increased in a time-dependent manner over 7 days following burn wound injury. At 10 days post-injury, steady and progressive wound healing was observed in the control animals. The present study confirmed that increased wound healing occurs following treatment with aloe emodin,, compared with resveratrol, providing support for the use of Aloe vera plants to improve burn wound healing.

Pulmonary surfactant protein A (SP-A) has been associated with host defense in the lung, and contributes to the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present study aimed to determine a non‑invasive method of measurement of SP‑A, and further examine the expression levels of SP‑A in patients with COPD. SP‑A was detected in the exhaled breath condensate (EBC) obtained from patients with COPD and from non‑COPD subjects. ⋯ Decreased expression levels of SP‑A in EBC were associated with a higher degree of airway limitation. These results suggested that the measurement of SP‑A levels in the EBC may serve as a method for monitoring airway obstruction in patients with COPD. Further investigations are required in order to examine these observations further and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) is an adenosine cyclic 3,5-monophosphate-specific degradative enzyme, which is closely associated with the inflammatory response. Among its four subtypes (A-D), it remains unclear which one exerts suppressive effects on inflammation and reduces neuropathic pain. The present study aimed to examine the modulation of neuroinflammation by PDE4 subtypes in the spinal cord of a rat model of L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL)-induced neuropathic pain. ⋯ Subtype-specific siRNA significantly suppressed the elevated expression levels; however, only rats treated with PDE4B siRNA exhibited improved MWT and TWL. Further analysis of the PDE4B siRNA-treated rats demonstrated that 8 days after SNL, the intensity of p-ERK was reduced, the expression levels of CD11b and glial fibrillary acidic protein GFAP were reduced, as well as the expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6. These results suggested that selective inhibition of PDE4B may relieve neuropathic pain, potentially via the suppression of glial activation and the release of cytokines in the spinal cord.

ATP-binding cassette transporters A1 (ABCA1) and G1 (ABCG1), and macrophage scavenger receptor, cluster of differentiation (CD)36, function as key mediators of cholesterol efflux and influx from macrophages. In addition, they are associated with foam cell formation and the development of atherosclerosis (AS). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) inhibition on lipid balance in oxidized-low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL)-stimulated rat macrophages, and to examine the role of ERK1/2 inhibitors in AS. ⋯ Treatment with Ox-LDL significantly increased lipid accumulation and upregulated the mRNA and protein expression levels of ABCA1, ABCG1 and CD36 in macrophages. The addition of U0126 resulted in a marked reduction of lipid deposition, upregulation of ABCA1/G1 expression and suppression of CD36 expression in Ox-LDL-stimulated macrophages. The results of the present study indicated a novel association between ERK1/2 signaling and lipid metabolism, thus suggesting that inhibition of ERK1/2 may be considered a promising therapeutic strategy against AS.

Substantial evidence from previous studies has suggested an association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and inflammation, and previous studies have associated prefrontal cortex (PFC) dysfunction with MDD. Systemic administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharide has been used to study inflammation-associated behavioral changes in rodents. ⋯ A total of 26 differentially expressed proteins were identified, two of which were selected for western blot analysis, the results of which revealed a significant increase in the expression levels of creatine kinase B and dihydropyrimidinase-like 3 in Dep mice, suggesting that changes in energy metabolism and neuro-genesis occur in the PFC of Dep mice. Further investigation on these processes and on the proteins of the PFC are required in order to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanism underlying MDD.
