Do Pediatricians Ask About Adverse Childhood Experiences in Pediatric Primary Care?
The stress associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has immediate and long-lasting effects. The objectives of this study were to examine 1) how often pediatricians ask patients' families about ACEs, 2) how familiar pediatricians are with the original ACE study, and 3) physician/practice characteristics, physicians' mental health training, and physicians' attitudes/beliefs that are associated with asking about ACEs. ⋯ Few pediatricians ask about all ACEs. Pediatric training that emphasizes the importance of social/emotional risk factors may increase the identification of ACEs in pediatric primary care.

Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units: An Analysis of Operations.
In 1998 the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) secured the first federal funding to develop an innovative network of public health-oriented entities: Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSUs). PEHSU goals were to provide pediatric and environmental health education to health care providers and health profession students, to offer consultation to health care professionals, parents, and others regarding environmental health exposures, and to provide referrals to specialized medical resources when necessary. This report analyzes the productivity of US PEHSUs from 1999 to 2014. ⋯ PEHSUs have grown into an established, productive network of clinical and educational centers whose expertise and activities have benefited both the public and health care professionals alike. The federal contributions to the cost of operating these centers have been more than offset by the benefits PEHSUs have conferred on the communities they serve.

Trajectories of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Self-Reported Health at Age 18.
Despite growing evidence of links between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and long-term health outcomes, there has been limited longitudinal investigation of such links in youth. The purpose of these analyses was to describe the patterns of exposure to ACEs over time and their links to youth health. ⋯ In addition to other negative outcomes, chronic ACEs appear to affect physical health in emerging adulthood. Interventions aimed at reducing exposure to ACEs and early mitigation of their effects may have lasting and widespread health benefits.
