Case ReportsStellate ganglion blockade (SGB) for refractory index finger pain - a case report.
To identify through case study the presentation and possible pathophysiological cause of complex regional pain syndrome and its preferential response to stellate ganglion blockade. ⋯ This case demonstrates the need for practitioners from all disciplines to be able to identify the clinical characteristics of complex regional pain syndrome to instigate immediate treatment and supports the notion that stellate ganglion blockade is preferable to upper limb intravenous regional anaesthetic block for refractory index finger pain associated with complex regional pain syndrome.

Comparative StudyEffects of a five-week intensive and multidisciplinary spine-specific functional restoration program in chronic low back pain patients with or without surgery.
Evaluating the efficacy of an intensive, dynamic and multidisciplinary spine-specific functional restoration program in patients with chronic low back pain with or without surgery. ⋯ The effects of the intensive program were validated; nevertheless, spine surgery seems to have a positive impact on some physical parameters of this spine-specific functional restoration program.

Review Case ReportsA rare case of paraplegia complicating a lumbar epidural infiltration.
We report the case of a patient who developed paraplegia following a low lumbar epidural steroid injection. Alternative approaches to (or alternative means of) performing transforaminal injections should be considered, in order to avoid devastating neurological complications. ⋯ Despite the rarity of this complication, patients should be made aware of its potential occurrence. In the case reported here, the functional prognosis is uncertain.

ReviewThe isolated sympathetic spinal cord: Cardiovascular and sudomotor assessment in spinal cord injury patients: A literature survey.
To present a comprehensive approach to the assessment of the severity of the autonomic lesion in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, with regard to the level of lesion. To discuss how to assess an isolated sympathetic spinal cord that has lost supraspinal control (sympathetically complete lesion). ⋯ For research purposes on the integrity of the spinal sympathetic pathways, a battery of test approach is probably needed, using a combination of stimuli above and below the lesion, evaluating both cardiovascular and sudomotor pathways.

Use of continuous interscalene brachial plexus block and rehabilitation to treat complex regional pain syndrome of the shoulder.
To evaluate the use of continuous interscalene brachial plexus block with bupivacaine to treat complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1 of the shoulder in adult patients who were refractory to standard therapies. ⋯ Treatment with a combination of a 1-week continuous interscalene brachial plexus block and rehabilitation may be a good option for patients with CRPS type 1 of the shoulder and who are refractory to standard therapies.
