Multicenter clinical trials have established new standards of care in the surgical and medical management of malignant melanoma. They have led to the testing of new therapies and improved outcomes for patients with loco-regional and distant disease. Many pressing questions remain, however, and additional multicenter trials are currently underway to address them. The purpose of this review is to summarize relevant ongoing and planned multicenter trials that have and continue to define current melanoma management.

This study was designed to clarify which attributes of stage II colon cancer are associated with tumor recurrence and survival after curative resection, and the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). ⋯ ACT for stage II colon cancer is recommended to improve the prognosis of patients with extensive venous invasion, patients with fewer than 13 dissected LNs, patients >50 years old, and male patients, particularly patients with more than two of these risk factors.

Portal vein embolization (PVE) is used to increase the volume and function of the liver that will remain after extensive liver resection. Operative outcomes are improved in properly selected patients who undergo PVE and experience adequate future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy. Absolute volume and volume change of the FLR after PVE (interpreted in context of liver disease) predict adequate liver function postresection. Oncologic outcomes following resection in patients with appropriately applied PVE are excellent.
