How foot progression angle affects knee adduction moment and angular impulse in people with and without medial knee osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis.
To investigate effects of foot progression angle (FPA) modification on the first and second peaks of external knee adduction moment (EKAM) and knee adduction angular impulse (KAAI) in individuals with and without medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) during level walking. ⋯ Discrepancy in biomechanical effects of FPA modification was demonstrated between individuals with and without medial knee OA. Compared with natural walking, both toe-in and toe-out gait may be more effective in lowering EKAM and KAAI in healthy individuals. Toe-out gait may reduce EKAM and KAAI in patients with mild to severe knee OA. There is insufficient data from patients with early-stage knee OA, indicating future research is required.

Stability of Measures of Pain Catastrophizing and Widespread Pain Following Total Knee Replacement.
Pain catastrophizing and widespread pain are predictors of pain chronicity/severity. Gaps remain in our understanding of the extent to which each is a stable (trait) or dynamic (state) variable. We undertook this study to assess the stability of each variable from before to after total knee replacement (TKR) and whether changes are explained by pain improvements. ⋯ The PCS score reflects state-like aspects of catastrophizing that diminish along with pain. In contrast, widespread pain scores worsened and improved equally often, regardless of knee pain relief. The findings urge caution in interpreting PCS score and widespread pain as trait measures in musculoskeletal research.

Prescription Opioid Use Among Patients With Acute Gout Discharged From the Emergency Department.
Acute gout is among the most painful inflammatory arthritides and a frequent cause of emergency department (ED) visits. Prescription opioids are the leading contributor to the ongoing opioid epidemic; EDs are often the source of the index prescription. Our aim was to assess the burden of opioid use and factors associated with its use among gout patients discharged from the ED. ⋯ Despite the availability of effective treatments, opioids are commonly used for the management of acute gout. This study highlights an opportunity to curb the opioid epidemic among gout patients.

Orofacial Motor Functions and Temporomandibular Disorders in Patients With Sjögren's Syndrome.
Sjögren's syndrome (SS) induces difficulty in chewing and swallowing due to low salivary flow. However, these symptoms may be associated with other factors, such as orofacial myofunctional disorders and temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which have not been comprehensively assessed in this population. The aims of this study were to investigate orofacial muscles and functions as well as the presence of TMD in patients with SS compared with a group without SS and to analyze whether the patients' experience of limitations in orofacial functioning is associated with the orofacial functional status and muscle pain related to TMD. ⋯ Patients' experiences with limitation in mastication and swallowing were associated with orofacial myofunctional status and muscle pain related to TMD. Those disorders should be monitored along with disease control and must be addressed in the clinical evaluation to prevent nutritional and metabolic comorbidities in patients with SS.
