Update of the CHIP (CT in Head Injury Patients) decision rule for patients with minor head injury based on a multicenter consecutive case series.
To update the existing CHIP (CT in Head Injury Patients) decision rule for detection of (intra)cranial findings in adult patients following minor head injury (MHI). ⋯ Use of the updated CHIP decision rule is a good alternative to current decision rules for patients with MHI. In contrast to the original CHIP the update identified all patients with (potential) neurosurgical lesions without increasing CT rate.

Background Studies from high income countries suggest improved survival for females as compared to males following trauma. However, data regarding differences in trauma outcomes between females and males is severely lacking from low- and middle-income countries. The objective of this study was to determine the association between sex and clinical outcomes amongst Indian trauma patients using the Australia-India Trauma Systems Collaboration database. ⋯ On multivariable regression analysis, sex was not associated significantly with 30-day or 24-hour in-hospital mortality. Conclusion This study did not demonstrate a significant difference in the 30-day trauma mortality or 24-hour trauma mortality between female and male trauma patients in India on adjusted analyses. A more granular data is needed to understand the interplay of injury severity, immediate post-traumatic hormonal and immunological alterations, and the impact of gender-based disparities in acute care settings.

The burden imposed by motorcyclist deaths and injuries is high in low- and middle-income countries. Many injured motorcycle riders in these settings are underage. The aim of this study was to assess the association between age and severe injury in young motorcycle riders. ⋯ Motorcycle riders who presented to the hospital with injuries after road traffic crashes and were aged 13-17 years and 18-19 years had significantly higher odds of severe injury than those aged 20-24 years.

To determine the prognostic significance of various clinical features and surgical techniques concerning anatomical and visual outcomes in shotgun pellet-inflicted ocular trauma. ⋯ The perforating injury was the commonest type of injury caused by shotgun pellets. The site of the entry wound in perforating injury had prognostic significance. The outcome was generally poor in OGI and good in CGI.

High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) use reduces work of breathing and improves oxygenation for patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure. Limited prior work has explored protocolized use of HFNC for trauma patients outside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The purpose of this study is to describe and evaluate use of HFNC for patients with rib fractures when therapy was standard of care on all floors of the hospital. ⋯ Findings suggest that HFNC therapy can be safely initiated and managed on all hospital floors for patients with multiple rib fractures. Making the therapy available outside the ICU may reduce healthcare resource use without adversely affecting patient outcomes.
