The narrative of the rise and fall of the stethoscope is partly written. Medical historians agree on the rise in its use; however, on the decline, they are less certain. ⋯ Primary sources include medical school curricula, books, medical journals, and popular literature. Trends and projections in patent applications for stethoscope modifications and sales of the instrument provide additional evidence for the robust position of the stethoscope in current American practice.

Prior studies in the civilian population have reported racial disparities in lung cancer outcomes following surgical treatment, including inferior quality of care and worse survival. It is unclear if racial disparities exist in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the largest integrated health care system in the United States. ⋯ Among veterans with NSCLC undergoing surgical treatment through the VHA, Black patients received comparable care with equivalent if not superior outcomes compared with White patients.

We present the case of a 32-year-old woman with a left empyema and T12 osteomyelitis resulting from group B Streptococcus infection occurring 3 weeks after instrumental delivery of a healthy boy. Empyema is a rare complication of instrumental delivery, and this patient highlights the maternal risk resulting from group B Streptococcus bacteremia.

A 50-year-old woman who was a nonsmoker presented to the out-patient-department with history of dry cough and breathlessness on exertion for the past 4 months along with onset of dull aching chest pain for the last 2 weeks. Her breathlessness had gradually deteriorated to the point that she experienced dyspnea even on walking a few steps on level ground. ⋯ There was no history of fever, night sweats, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, hemoptysis, dysphagia, hoarseness of voice, edema, headache, visual disturbance, weakness of any extremity, or drooping of eyelids. Her medical history revealed that she had undergone hysterectomy 8 years earlier for removal of a probable uterine mass, for which no documentation was available.
