Comparative StudyMethemoglobinemia in aluminium phosphide poisoning in rats.
Aluminium phosphide (AlP) a grain fumigant is the leading cause of intentional poisoning in North India. The mechanisms involved in toxicity are not known and there is no antidote till date. The present study was carried out to investigate the oxygen free radical generation, methemoglobinemia and effect of methylene blue treatment on survival time in rat model of AlP poisoning. ⋯ Blood MDA levels increased at 10 and 30 min after AlP exposure with simultaneous rise in MeHb levels suggesting methemoglobinemia could be due to increased oxygen free radical generation. Methylene blue caused a significant fall in both the parameters with prolongation of survival time. It is concluded that AlP causes methemoglobinemia responding to methylene blue treatment.

Organochlorine pesticide-induced oxidative stress and immune suppression in rats.
Effects of subchronic DDT and lindane exposure were evaluated on lipid peroxidation, antioxidant mechanisms and humoral immune response in rats. Oral administration of DDT, (100 and 200 ppm) and lindane (40 and 80 ppm) dose dependently increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in serum after 8 wk of treatment. ⋯ Simultaneous treatment with ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg) markedly attenuated the effects of DDT and lindane on (a) lipid peroxidation, (b) SOD activity and (c) humoral immune suppression. These results indicate the possible involvement of free radicals in organochlorine-induced immunotoxicity.

Central nervous system depressant activities of melatonin in rats and mice.
Melatonin (10 and 20 mg/kg) potentiated pentobarbitone (45 mg/kg) induced hypnosis; it (50 and 100 mg/kg) decreased both total and ambulatory activity; produced (10, 25 and 50 mg/kg) hypothermia and possessed (10-400 mg/kg) significant analgesic property both in tail-flick and acetic acid-induced writhing tests. Melatonin in low dose (10 mg/kg) significantly reduced the forced-swimming induced immobility period per se and also reserpine induced immobility. While the antinociceptive effect of melatonin was sensitive to reversal by naloxone (2 mg/kg), other CNS depressant profile resembled the effects of benzodiazepines.

Interaction of muscle relaxant effect of gallamine with ethanol: in vivo mammalian model.
Ethanol produces alterations in muscular contraction and neuromuscular function both in vitro and in vivo in mammalian and amphibian tissues in dose dependent manner. It is not very well known whether gallamine, a commonly used muscle relaxant produces any interaction with ethanol. ⋯ It may be due to fact that ataxic dose may not be affecting neuromuscular transmission a significant manner. It, therefore, does not warrant to adjust the dose of gallamine in alcoholic persons.

Simple burn wound models are always warranted. In view of this a partial thickness reproducible 2 degrees C burn wound has been produced using hot molten wax. This model is simple, convenient, and could be used to monitor wound contraction and epithelization in burn wounds.
