Comparative StudyMyocardial 2D strain echocardiography and cardiac biomarkers in children during and shortly after anthracycline therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL): a prospective study.
The aim of this study was to investigate myocardial 2D strain echocardiography and cardiac biomarkers in the assessment of cardiac function in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) during and shortly after treatment with anthracyclines. ⋯ Children with newly diagnosed ALL showed decline of systolic and diastolic function during treatment with anthracyclines using cardiac biomarkers and myocardial 2D strain echocardiography. N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels were not related to echocardiographic strain parameters and cTnT was not a predictor for abnormal strain at T = 2.Therefore, the combination of cardiac biomarkers and myocardial 2D strain echocardiography is important in the assessment of cardiac function of children with ALL treated with anthracyclines.

Left ventricular twist in a normal African adult population.
Speckle tracking has emerged as a quantitative technique for assessing left ventricular (LV) function. However, no normative data for LV twist using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) are available in the black population. This study assessed myocardial mechanics by determining LV twist parameters in different age groups using STE, and evaluated the effect of ageing on LV twist in this population. ⋯ These data establish values for strain and twist in a normal black adult population. Net twist increases with age, whereas strain parameters decrease. Age is the strongest independent predictor of LV twist.

Comparative StudySite-dependency of the E/e' ratio in predicting invasive left ventricular filling pressure in patients with suspected or ascertained coronary artery disease.
To test the accuracy of different mitral annular sites of the E/e' ratio in predicting invasive left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) in patients hospitalized for coronary artery disease (CAD). ⋯ In patients with CAD, E/e'L is the most accurate parameter in predicting abnormally increased LVFP.

Comparative StudyLeft atrial strain and strain rate before and following restrictive annuloplasty for ischaemic mitral regurgitation evaluated by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography.
We retrospectively evaluated left atrial (LA) strain and strain rate (SR) before and after undersized mitral ring annuloplasty (UMRA) for chronic ischaemic mitral regurgitation (CIMR) with two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. ⋯ Left atrial peak global strain, peak systolic SR, and peak early diastolic SR were cofactors associated to recurrent MR. The assessment of LA strain and SR, in addition to other echocardiographic parameters, can be helpful in detecting patients undergoing UMRA who are unlikely to benefit from annuloplasty.

Comparative StudyDeterminants of preserved diastolic function at the lateral annulus in patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction.
The reversal of the early diastolic mitral annular velocity (e') to the late diastolic mitral annular velocity (a') ratio (e'/a' <1) develops earlier in the septum than in the lateral mitral annulus on tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Accordingly, patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction presenting as a reversed septal e'/a' ratio can be divided into two groups depending on the presence of a reversal of lateral e'/a'. The aim of this study was to identify the determinants of preserved diastolic function at the lateral annulus in patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction. ⋯ The age, septal TDI, and LVM/h(2.7) were independent determinants of preserved diastolic function at the lateral annulus in patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction presenting as a reversed septal e'/a' ratio.
