Injuries involving massive blood loss, such as burns, combat wounds, and injuries resulting from car accidents, require fluid resuscitation. The risk involved in fluid therapy is overloading of the circulation, resulting in pulmonary edema which can lead to death. The risk of pulmonary edema may be eliminated by proper determination of maximal infusion volume and rate. ⋯ The results indicate that edema is not the only possible adverse effect of overloading the cardiovascular system with fluid. The simulation demonstrated that in certain cases the heart's oxygen balance can become negative. Limiting the rate of infusion can reduce this risk.

This paper describes a program for bedside-practicable calculation of APACHE II score, providing an additional option for both a rapid and sensitive screening as well as for a more specific sepsis assessment by the Elebute score in case of a putative diagnosis of sepsis. Thus, diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of septic patients and the assessment of disease progression and classification of "responders" to therapy can be promptly available in the ICU setting. The program is written in BASIC and therefore can easily be adapted to most microcomputers available on the market.

In this paper we show nonlinear standard and hybrid median filters are appropriate to the filtering of signals of saccadic eye movements. Although these filters effectively attenuate noise, they do not harm the parameters of saccades, particularly the maximum velocity which is an important indicator of certain diseases and disorders in man. The filters have been tested by simulation as well as actual eye movement signals recorded electro-oculographically and photoelectrically.

Wallace first reported the changes in EEG during transcendental mediation [6]. Banquet [1] observed, on the basis of spectral analysis of the EEG, that the mediation state was a unique state of consciousness, and separate from wakefulness, drowsiness or sleep. The Qi Gong of China is not the same as either transcendental mediation or the Yoga Gong. ⋯ The peak frequency of EEG alpha rhythm is slower than the resting state. The change of EEG during Qi Gong between anterior and posterior half is negative correlation. These changes are statistically significant.

The present paper is a study of how the inaccuracy of coefficients of digital lowpass filters may distort the maximum angular velocities of saccadic eye movements. Maximum velocity is one of the most important parameters of saccades. ⋯ The lowpass filter has been tested by simulation as well as real eye movement data recorded electro-oculographically and photoelectrically. The coefficients of digital lowpass filters should be computed and applied with sufficient accuracy to prevent filters from altering the maximum velocities a phenomenon which might lead to erroneous diagnosis.
