Intersections represent the most dangerous sites in the road network for pedestrians: not only is modal separation often impossible, but elements of geometry, traffic control, and built environment further exacerbate crash risk. Evaluating the safety impact of intersection features requires methods to quantify relationships between different factors and pedestrian injuries. The purpose of this paper is to model the effects of exposure, geometry, and signalization on pedestrian injuries at urban signalized intersections using a Full Bayes spatial Poisson Log-Normal model that accounts for unobserved heterogeneity and spatial correlation. ⋯ Lastly, the posterior expected number of crashes was used to identify hotspots. The proposed ranking criteria identified many intersections close to the city centre where the expected number of crashes is highest and intersections along arterials with lower pedestrian volumes where individual pedestrian risk is elevated. Understanding the effects of intersection geometry and pedestrian signalization will aid in ensuring the safety of pedestrians at signalized intersections.

In this study, we attempted to explain drivers' crash risk variation in car-following for crash avoidance considering the effects of drivers' visual perception, vehicle type, and horizontal curves, with a structural equations model. The model was built by incorporating drivers' speed risk perception and distance risk perception as latent variables. A series of on-road experiments was conducted on the curved segments of a freeway in China to collect naturalistic driving data to approximate the model. ⋯ In addition, the difference between the effect of speed risk perception and distance perception on crash risk variation was discussed considering the direct and indirect origins of risk in driving. The findings suggests that the incorporation of visual perceptual, vehicular, and roadway factors and its relevant speed risk perception and distance risk perception can better explain the crash risk in car-following. This study also emphasized the possibility and the need of applying the line markings as a visual intervention to prevent the drivers from rear-end crashes on curves, which may provide new insights and be a new solution for roadway safety.

Comparative Study
A comparative study of safe and unsafe signalized intersections from the view point of pedestrian behavior and perception.
Signalized intersections with marked crosswalks enhance pedestrian safety by providing the designated right of way to pedestrians. However, a significant number of pedestrian fatalities occur at signalized intersections, which may primarily be due to pedestrians' violation behaviors. Since pedestrians' fatalities are not uniform across signalized intersections in a city, it may be expected that violations would also vary across the sites. ⋯ Results indicate that pedestrians' signal violations behavior and dissatisfaction are statistically significantly higher at locations with recorded fatal pedestrian crashes. Results from different models and analysis clearly pointed out several planning and design deficiencies such as longer waiting time before crossing, higher pedestrian-vehicular interaction, pedestrian's state of crossing, and a number of personal level attributes such as pedestrian's intended mode of transportation and their state of journey, pedestrian's home location, pedestrian's socio-demographic characteristics as important predictors of pedestrians' violation behavior. The methodology and findings are useful not only for proactive safety improvement at signalized intersections but also to proactively identify potential unsafe sites.

This study applied the revised-Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (r-RST) to assess the influence of individual differences in young male and female drivers' risk perceptions and intentions to exceed the posted speed limit in a 60 km/hr zone. Relevant to the current study was the Behavioural Activation System (BAS; sensitive to reward), with a specific focus on the BAS processes: Reward Interest, Goal-Drive Persistence, Reward Reactivity and Impulsivity, and the Fight-Flight-Freeze System (FFFS; sensitive to punishment). It was hypothesised that young male and female drivers with stronger BAS traits would report lower risk perceptions towards speeding behaviour than those with weaker BAS traits and this risk perception would predict greater intentions to exceed the posted speed limit in 60 km/hr zones. ⋯ Further, males with stronger Goal-Drive Persistence and reported higher perceptions of risk and lower intentions to speed than participants with weaker Goal-Drive Persistence. Contrary to expectations, the BAS processes of Reward Interest and Reward Reactivity, and the FFFS were not significant. The findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of how the r-RST traits, specifically Goal-Drive Persistence and Impulsivity may influence speeding behaviour as well as the understanding of the unique influence of the four underlying BAS processes.

Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are vulnerable to serious injury due to limited external protective devices. Understanding the level of recovery, and differences between these road user groups, is an important step towards improved understanding of the burden of road trauma, and prioritisation of prevention efforts. This study aimed to characterise and describe patient-reported outcomes of vulnerable road users at 6 and 12 months following orthopaedic trauma. ⋯ Pedestrians and motorcyclists involved in on-road collisions experienced poorer patient-reported outcomes at 6 and 12 months post-injury when compared to cyclists. A focus on both primary injury prevention strategies, and investment in ongoing support and treatment to maximise recovery, is necessary to reduce the burden of road trauma for vulnerable road users.
