Clinical TrialHypothermia and complications in postbariatric body contouring.
Postbariatric body contouring represents a rapidly growing field. With long operative times and high rates of minor complications, evidence-based guidelines for operative management are needed. Data analyzing the impact of perioperative factors on patient outcomes are currently limited. ⋯ Risk, II.

The auriculotemporal nerve in etiology of migraine headaches: compression points and anatomical variations.
The auriculotemporal nerve has been identified as one of the peripheral trigger sites for migraine headaches. However, its distal course is poorly mapped following emergence from the parotid gland. In addition, a reliable anatomical landmark for locating the potential compression points along the course of the nerve during surgery has not been sufficiently described. ⋯ Findings from this cadaver study provide information relevant to the operative localization of potential compression points along the auriculotemporal nerve.

ReviewMeasuring quality of life and patient satisfaction in facial paralysis patients: a systematic review of patient-reported outcome measures.
Incomplete recovery from facial nerve damage has functional deficits and significant social and psychological consequences. To evaluate the success of surgical and nonsurgical interventions in facial paralysis patients, patient satisfaction and impact on quality of life should be considered. The objective of this study is to identify existing patient-reported outcome instruments that measure quality-of-life outcomes in the facial paralysis population. ⋯ Although instruments are available for measuring outcomes with respect to facial function, there are few instruments developed to specifically evaluate the impact of facial paralysis on quality of life. To quantify treatment outcomes of facial paralysis patients, future research to develop and validate a new patient-reported outcome instrument is needed.

Case ReportsAnaphylactic-like reaction to methylene blue: case report and review of perioperative hypersensitivity reactions.
Anaphylaxis and anaphylactic-like reactions in the perioperative period are a significant concern for anesthesiologists and surgeons. With an incidence as high as one in 3500 and a mortality rate of 3 to 6 percent, proper management of these reactions is essential. The available surgical literature provides varied and unclear guidelines for determining the nature of these reactions and has no consensus treatment algorithm. The authors present a rare case of hypersensitivity reaction to methylene blue during cleft lip repair. A review of current literature for best-practice evaluation and management guidelines follows. ⋯ Therapeutic, V.
