Reconstruction of the inferior alveolar nerve with bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid nerve conduits.
Iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve can result in debilitating anesthesia, dysesthesia, and allodynia. The authors report their experience with polyglycolic acid nerve tubes in inferior alveolar nerve reconstruction. ⋯ : Therapeutic, IV.

Biography Historical ArticleThe Goldwyn diary of November and December 1960, at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lambaréné, Gabon.
Through unexpected circumstances, I went to Lambaréné, in Gabon, to be Dr. Albert Schweitzer's surgeon for 2 months, November and December of 1960. This diary I can honestly say I never thought would become public. ⋯ It was a world of its own and, though small, it came into being because of the arching ideals and unflagging dedication of a remarkable man. His example should inspire us to enlarge our personal horizons, not just to recognize the less fortunate but to act without delay on their behalf. For each of us, there is an Ogowe waiting to be crossed.

Comparative StudyLong-term psychological functioning of adults with severe congenital facial disfigurement.
In adults with severe congenital facial disfigurement, assessment of long-term psychological impact remains limited. This study determines the long-term psychological functioning in these patients and evaluates differences compared with patients with acquired facial disfigurement and a non-facially disfigured reference group. Also explored is the extent to which psychological functioning of the congenital group is related to satisfaction with facial appearance, fear of negative appearance evaluation by others, self-esteem, and severity of the facial deformity. ⋯ Risk, II.

Nonhuman primate model of fibula vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation demonstrates donor-recipient bony union.
Vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation has demonstrated clinical success with standard immunosuppression in hand and upper extremity transplantation. The authors developed a fibular vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation model in nonhuman primates to investigate healing and rejection patterns of bone and associated tissues. ⋯ In contrast to successes in extremity vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation, the authors' nonhuman primate fibular vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation model showed early skin loss, replacement of donor bone marrow, and chronic rejection. Donor-recipient bone union did occur and supports the potential for reconstruction of bony continuity defects using isolated vascularized bone allotransplants.

ReviewAn update on facial transplantation cases performed between 2005 and 2010.
Since 2005, 13 facial allotransplantation cases have been performed worldwide. The major indications for these facial allotransplantations were neurofibromatosis and trauma injuries, including animal bites, burns, falls, and shotgun blasts. ⋯ This report provides a useful overview of the technical aspects of face transplantation; however, the reports on long-term functional and aesthetic outcomes will help to define the future of face transplantation.
