Risk factors for development of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal bacteremia among VRE colonizers : A retrospective case control study.
We aimed to determine the proportion of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) colonized patients among all inpatients who later developed VRE bacteremia during hospital stay and to identify the risk factors for VRE bacteremia at a tertiary hospital. ⋯ A VRE colonization in patients receiving broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics including carbapenems and cephalosporins may result in bacteremia. It is possible to keep mortality at very low levels in VRE bacteremia with effective infection control measures, rapid infectious diseases consultation and rational antimicrobial treatment based on current epidemiological data.

Mortality after cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a medical ICU : A sex-specific outcome analysis.
Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and postresuscitation care in the intensive care unit (ICU) are standardized procedures; however, there is evidence suggesting sex-dependent differences in clinical management and outcome variables after cardiac arrest (CA). ⋯ In a single center CPR database no statistically significant sex-specific differences regarding post-resuscitation care, survival and neurological outcome after 6 months were observed.

Serum rheumatoid factor is correlated with liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B.
Non-invasive methods are being developed to evaluate liver fibrosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of rheumatoid factor (RF) to predict liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB). ⋯ In the current study, we found that there was a significant positive correlation between RF and liver fibrosis stage in patients with CHB. The RF that is easily obtained with low cost may be considered as an alternative biomarker for predicting liver fibrosis in CHB.
