Randomized Controlled TrialNonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or glucosamine reduced pain and improved muscle strength with resistance training in a randomized controlled trial of knee osteoarthritis patients.
To investigate the effect of 12 weeks of strength training in combination with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), glucosamine, or placebo on muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), strength (primary outcome parameters), and function, power, pain, and satellite cell number (secondary outcome parameters) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ In patients with knee OA, NSAID or glucosamine administration during a 12-week strength-training program did not improve muscle mass gain, but improved maximal muscle strength gain in comparison with treatment with placebo. However, we do not find that the benefits are large enough to justify taking NSAIDs or glucosamine.

To evaluate the relationship between poststroke fatigue and suicidality (SI) in Chinese patients with first or recurrent stroke. ⋯ These findings should alert clinicians that early identification and treatment of fatigue may reduce the suicidal risk in stroke patients.

Review Meta AnalysisWhat is our knowledge of functioning and disability in hand conditions based on?
To analyze the content of published studies on hand conditions using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a reference, and to highlight the most common aspects of functioning as well as those that deserve more consideration in research on hand conditions. ⋯ The ICF provides a valuable reference to systematically analyze the content of published studies on hand conditions. Research activity needs to widen its focus on mental functions, further mobility functioning, self-care, and domestic life aspects, as well as environmental factors to encompass the impact of hand conditions on an individual's health. This would increase our knowledge on patients' needs and would help to ensure patient-oriented care.

Trends in function and postdischarge mortality in a medicine for the elderly rehabilitation center over a 10-year period.
To ascertain trends in function and mortality after admission to a medicine for the elderly rehabilitation unit, and to analyze factors associated with these outcomes. ⋯ Functional and mortality outcomes improved over a 10-year period in this rehabilitation unit, despite similar Barthel scores on admission and equivalent lengths of stay.

Case ReportsExternal lid loading for the temporary treatment of paresis of the M. orbicularis oculi: a case report.
This clinical note re-introduces external lid loading with the help of a lead weight for the temporary treatment of lagophthalmos. Although simple and effective, the technique is rarely used. Instead of wearing a monoculus, the patient uses an individually tailored lead weight (0.8-mm thickness, 1.0-2.0g) stuck on the lid to enable its closure. ⋯ External lid loading for the temporary treatment of lagophthalmos is simple and effective. Compared with a monoculus, vision is unimpaired and the aesthetic is more appropriate for most patients. Faster restoration of the M. orbicularis oculi hints at a potentially facilitatory effect of the weight.
