Sex and body mass index correlate with Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index and quality of life scores in knee osteoarthritis.
To examine the associations of sex, body mass index (BMI), and age with knee osteoarthritis (OA) symptomatic severity. ⋯ Based on the results of this analysis, it can be concluded that women and patients with a higher BMI with knee OA are at a greater risk for worse symptoms.

Detecting local twitch responses of myofascial trigger points in the lower-back muscles using ultrasonography.
To evaluate the role of ultrasonography for detecting local twitch responses (LTRs) of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in deeply located lower-back muscles. ⋯ These findings suggest that ultrasonography was useful for detecting LTRs of MTrPs, especially for LTRs in the deep muscles. Ultrasound guidance may improve the therapeutic efficacy of trigger point injection for treating MTrPs in the deep muscles.

Assessing physical function in adult acquired major upper-limb amputees by combining the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) Outcome Questionnaire and clinical examination.
To describe physical function in adult acquired major upper-limb amputees (ULAs) by combining self-assessed arm function and physical measures obtained by clinical examinations; to estimate associations between background factors and self-assessed arm function in ULAs; and to assess whether clinical examination findings may be used to detect reduced arm function in unilateral ULAs. ⋯ Upper-limb loss clearly affects physical function. DASH score limitation profiles may be useful in individual clinical assessments. Targeted clinical examination may indicate patients with extra rehabilitational needs. Such examinations may be of special importance in relation to prosthesis function.

Weight-bearing asymmetry during sit-stand transitions related to impairment and functional mobility after total knee arthroplasty.
To examine changes in weight-bearing (WB) asymmetry during sit-stand transitions for individuals during the first 6 months after unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Relationships between WB asymmetry, clinical measures of knee impairment, and functional mobility also were evaluated. ⋯ Patients with unilateral knee OA showed WB asymmetry during sit-stand transitions early after unilateral TKA that improved by 6 months after surgery and was no different from that for healthy people of similar age. For people in the first 6 months after TKA, greater symmetry was related to better function and strength symmetry.

Current trends in venous thromboembolism among persons hospitalized with acute traumatic spinal cord injury: does early access to rehabilitation matter?
To determine the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in acute care settings that is attributable to extended length of stay (LOS), insurance status, and access to rehabilitation. ⋯ Fewer patients with TSCI under indigent care received postacute rehabilitation compared with Medicare or commercial insurance. Insurance status remains a major barrier to timely transfer to rehabilitation, leading to protracted LOS in acute care with increased risk of VTE.
