To investigate the effectiveness and cost of physical therapy (PT) or occupational therapy (OT) in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). ⋯ In different ways PT and OT each contribute to the recovery from RSD of the upper extremity.

Comparative StudyBack and hip extensor activities during trunk flexion/extension: effects of low back pain and rehabilitation.
To compare lumbar paraspinal, gluteus maximus, and biceps femoris muscle function during sagittal trunk flexion and extension in patients with chronic low back pain and healthy control subjects, and to assess the influence of rehabilitation in the back pain patients. ⋯ The activity of the gluteus maximus muscle during the flexion-extension cycle was reduced in patients with chronic low back pain. The gluteal muscles should be taken into consideration in the rehabilitation of these patients.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialAnesthesia for the superior laryngeal nerves and tartaric acid-induced cough.
The internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (ibSLN) conveys impulses for the laryngeal cough reflex, which protects the laryngeal aditus and prevents the development of aspiration pneumonia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of bilateral anesthesia of the ibSLN on the cough reflex after inhalation of a nebulized chemoirritant solution of tartaric acid. ⋯ Tartaric acid-induced cough may be useful in assessing the integrity of the laryngeal cough reflex after anesthesia or in patients with neurologic injury who are at risk of developing aspiration pneumonia. It may also be useful in making the decision whether to resume oral feeding.

Determining the relation between quality of life, handicap, fitness, and physical activity for persons with spinal cord injury.
Determining relationships among fitness, physical activity, subjective quality of life, and handicap in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Physical activity may play an important role in handicap for persons with SCI, particularly persons with quadriplegic injuries. The lack of a relation between activity variables and subjective quality of life may be related to the global nature of the measure used.

Neurologic recovery after traumatic spinal cord injury: data from the Model Spinal Cord Injury Systems.
To present data on neurologic recovery gathered by the Model Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Systems over a 10-year period. ⋯ Neurologic recovery after SCI is influenced by etiology and severity of injury. Multicenter studies on prognostic features such as preserved pin sensation in grade B injuries may identify subgroups with similar recovery patterns. Identification of such groups would facilitate clinical trials for neurologic recovery in acute SCI.
