Acute viral bronchiolitis and risk of asthma in schoolchildren: analysis of a Brazilian newborn cohort.
To verify whether the occurrence of acute viral bronchiolitis in the first year of life constitutes a risk factor for asthma at age 6 considering a parental history of asthma. ⋯ Acute viral bronchiolitis in the first year of life is a risk factor for asthma in children with parental history of asthma.

ReviewNeonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in developing Latin American countries.
To review the principles of neonatal-pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy, prognosis, and its establishment in limited resource-limited countries in Latino America. ⋯ The best results in short- and long-term survival are in patients with isolated respiratory diseases. Today extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy is a standard therapy in some Latin American referral centers. It is hoped that these new extracorporeal membrane oxygenation centers will have a positive impact on the survival of newborns and children with respiratory or cardiac failure, and that they will be available for an increasing number of patients from this region in the near future.

To evaluate the prognosis factors of children with sepsis and acute kidney injury. ⋯ The risk factors for mortality in children with acute kidney injury were associated with sepsis severity.

ReviewMicrocephaly and Zika virus: a clinical and epidemiological analysis of the current outbreak in Brazil.
This study aimed to critically review the literature available regarding the Zika virus outbreak in Brazil and its possible association with microcephaly cases. ⋯ The development of diagnostic techniques that confirm a cause-effect association and studies regarding the physiopathology of the central nervous system impairment should be prioritized. It is also necessary to strictly define the criteria for the diagnosis of microcephaly to identify cases that should undergo an etiological investigation.

Observational StudyHospital survival upon discharge of ill-neonates transported by ground or air ambulance to a tertiary center.
To evaluate the differences in hospital survival between modes of transport to a tertiary center in Colombia for critically ill neonates. ⋯ Mode of transport was not associated with the outcome. In Colombia, access to medical services through air transport is a good option for neonates in critical condition. Further studies would determine the optimum distance (time of transportation) to obtain good clinical outcomes according type of ambulance.
