Comparative StudyHeart rate variability is independently associated with C-reactive protein but not with Serum amyloid A. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.
Increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. It is hypothesized that dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) leads to increased inflammation via the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a marker of ANS function. HRV has been shown to be associated with CRP levels. Currently, there are no studies addressing the relationship between HRV and SAA. ⋯ Reduced HRV indices are independently associated with increased CRP levels, but not with SAA levels. This association supports the hypothesis that dysregulation of the ANS may lead to increased inflammation early in adulthood.

Randomized Controlled TrialPlasma n-3 and n-6 fatty acids and the incidence of atrial fibrillation following coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
The anti-inflammatory or anti-arrhythmic effects of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) may decrease the risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF), but interventional studies have yielded conflicting results. We examined the association between n-3 LC-PUFA and n-6 LC-PUFA in plasma phospholipids (PL) and POAF in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ This study suggests that n-3 LC-PUFA supplements might prevent POAF in CABG patients with low baseline levels of these fatty acids in plasma PL, but may be harmful in those with high levels. AA may play an important role in electrophysiological processes.

Decreased gene expression of LC3 in peripheral leucocytes of patients with coronary artery disease.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common and multifactorial arterial disease that is mainly caused by atherosclerosis. Macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils have been implicated in atherosclerotic plaque development. Autophagy, a highly conserved cellular process for the removal of long-lived protein and organelles, plays a variety of pathophysiological roles. However, the roles of autophagy in peripheral leucocytes in atherosclerosis and CAD have not been explored. ⋯ LC3 gene expression in the peripheral leucocytes was significantly decreased in patients with CAD, indicating that autophagosome formation is decreased. These data suggest that autophagy in circulating leucocytes may be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and CAD.

Endogenous stress response in Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy and acute myocardial infarction.
As the clinical, electrocardiographic and laboratory presentation of Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is similar, both entities are in general only distinguishable by coronary angiography. The purpose of this study was to examine the endogenous stress response at presentation, quantified by the copeptin level, of patients with TTC and patients with AMI, as copeptin may be useful in the non-invasive differentiation between both diseases. ⋯ The endogenous stress response, quantified by a novel sensitive biomarker, seems to be different in patients with TTC and AMI. Copeptin levels may be helpful in the non-invasive differentiation between TTC and AMI.
