Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, usually autosomal recessive disorder of ciliary dysfunction associated with lung involvement, which has a great impact on health. There is limited information concerning the aerobic fitness of children and adolescents with PCD. The aim of this study was to assess cardiopulmonary functional capacity and its relationship with pulmonary function and physical activity (PA) levels in patients with PCD. ⋯ Assessment of resting pulmonary function and cardiopulmonary functional capacity could contribute to the evaluation of pulmonary impairment in PCD. Given the benefit of physical exercise on airway clearance and on general health and quality of life, patients with PCD should be encouraged to adopt an active lifestyle.

Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: clinicopathological characteristics and implications for treatment in 276 patients.
There is debate concerning the clinical significance of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), and therefore, the rise in the incidence of PTMC creates management dilemmas. The purpose of this study was to analyse the clinicopathological characteristics of PTMC in an island region that has a high prevalence of goitre and to determine risk factors for the worst prognosis. ⋯ Patients presenting multifocal, bilateral PTMC with a maximum diameter > 5 mm and thyroid capsule invasion may have an increased risk of lymph node metastasis. These factors should be considered in the follow-up for these patients.

Inorganic phosphate and FGF-23 predict outcome in stable systolic heart failure.
Recent studies show associations between inorganic phosphate and risk of heart failure in the general population as well as between fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) and outcome in coronary heart disease. This study was carried out to assess whether circulating levels of inorganic phosphate and FGF-23, a new central hormone in mineral bone metabolism, predict outcome in systolic heart failure. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrate the independent prognostic value of inorganic phosphate and FGF-23 in heart failure even in the context of established risk markers.

Neck circumference as a novel parameter to determine metabolic risk factors in obese children.
To establish the association between neck circumference and cardiometabolic risk factors and to determine the utility of the neck circumference as a parameter in predicting children at cardiometabolic risk. ⋯ Neck circumference measurement was shown to be associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in children. We suggest the use of neck circumference as a novel, simple, practical and reliable anthropometric index in predicting children at risk for cardiometabolic diseases.

IL28B and interferon-gamma inducible protein 10 for prediction of rapid virologic response and sustained virologic response in HIV-HCV-coinfected patients.
A polymorphism near the IL28B gene has been shown to be associated with virologic response to antiviral treatment in HCV-infected patients. The predictive value of interferon-gamma inducible protein 10 (IP10) on treatment outcome has been described in HCV patients. Data on combining these predictors in HIV-HCV-coinfected patients are not available. ⋯ The IL28B SNP influences rapid viral response, relapse rates and SVR. The combination of IL28B and IP10 represents a predictive model of SVR in HIV-HCV coinfection.
